  1. Another one saved. Brilliant :) Probably going to take more than a couple of weekends to fix it though  ;)  ;D That's the second Mk 3 GT6 that I've seen getting saved from oblivion in the last couple of months -- the other one was being trailored up the M6 when we were heading home from the classic car show at the NEC on the Saturday afternoon (17 Nov). At least we hoped it was en route to being saved...

Been there done that as well over the years and I've just about come full circle on this issue :X I've recently changed from 185/60-13 on the Spit 2.5 to 165/70-13 and I'm loving it  :) I can actually park the thing now without tearing bicep muscles and no longer have to get all my fillings refitted after driving through Edinburgh ;D ;D It's quite a powerful car for a Spit and I can detect a slight loss of traction but for normal road use it's virtually undetectable. We now use the Spit almost exclusively for road work and touring (which wasn't the original intention  :B) and for that sort of use it's a much nicer car with the 165s on it.

  5. MX5 sears don't fit straight in. Fettling required. There's a couple of modifications possible which help (but don't eliminate) the height issue -- can't remember the details. I'm about 5ft 10in and the the MX5 seats in our Spit are OK height wise -- just, I reckon there's about an inch of clearance between my head and the roof ;D Having said that mine are coming out as well. They're very comfy but I don't like the driving position -- slightly high and too far forward. Replacing them with a pair of late Spit 1500 headrest/recliners which I'm going to refurb over the winter.

SUs will be more economical. FWIW Webers is one of things I'd do differently on the 2.5 Spit if I was doing it all over again. A lot of money for not much benefit in a road car.

  9. Mike -- I think it was Phil (the brookster) that made the epic journey to Edinburgh Airport! Annette and I watched the cars at Stirling for a while. Got a couple of glimpses of the estate when you went to fuel up and came back to collect Anne before setting off again. Brilliant that you made it round. I wasn't at my sociable best on Saturday -- was totally choked up with the cold and by that time had a splitting headache so wasn't in the mood for saying much. Still enjoyed seeing all the cars though.

  14. You took the words right out of my mouth  :) I was just about to start a post saying the very same. Good luck to all on this year's RBRR. Unfortunately our plans to run in Glenn's 2.5pi fell through. The upside, though, is that this will probably be the kick in the pants I need to get the Saloon back on the road and at least make the start in 2014 :) Hoping to get to Stirling on Saturday afternoon for a bit of Triumph watching.
  15. Arc welders are generally far too brutal for panel work. Best option for home/DIY is MIG. Lots of info here: http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/ Gas is still an option of course -- but probably not the best for home/DIY these days for safety reasons. Edited to add - if you're familiar with Arc welding you should be able to get up to speed with MIG welding no problem.

Mike drove the Spit a few years ago and is probably better placed than I am to compare with other Triumphs  :) It's Automec in mine as well.
  17. Just FWIW another POV! Our Spit was kitted out with all new brake and clutch parts when it was rebuilt/restored ten years ago. I didn't specifically ask for it but silicone fluid was installed in both. There have been no reliability/maintainability problems with it whatsoever and in terms of performance I've had no issues with it either. Personally I'd be happy to use it again but only in a new build situation. I wouldn't ever change an existing installation over from one to the other in.
  18. Interesting -- I'll check the wheels I have for the Saloon. Thought they were Wellers but they could very well be Mangels. They look pretty much identical to those on your Spit. Probably academic since I want to put S alloys on it if/when it ever makes it out of the garage...  :X Pic of Saloon (with Weller/Mangel wheels on) before I cut the N/S front wing and sills off -- and stopped  :B
