Davemate
I need a battery for my mk1,what size should it be. The one that's in it is tiny so its not the recomended size one and its knackered.I will be fitting an alternator, don't if it makes any difference or not.Or is it a case of if it fits it's ok ! JohnD
There is no "right size".A race car can manage with nine AA batteries, as long as it has a full sized one to plug in to start it.THAT is where you need a big one.Just go to Halfords or similar with the dimensions of the battery box, and see what they have that will fit the car and your budget, with the correct terminals. (Do Ford still use bolt-on, L-terminals, whereas everyone else uses post terminals?)Why is your battery knackered? Age? They all die, just like we do. Or is the system not charging properly? A battery lasts longest if it is permanently fully charged. An alternator will give you more current than a dynamo, and will mean you can chuck out the voltage regulator, another source of failure. Also check that nothing is discharging the battery while the car is in store, short circuits, door switches, radios.John
Richard B
I use an HCB072 from Halfords (540amp cranking). This one has a 4 year warranty. If you know someone with a trade card there is quite a saving on the price. Get some battery leads with soldered terminals rather than compression fittings if you can. Clive
http://www.eurocarparts.com/car-parts?gclid=CJ6NxOzbgrMCFaTJtAodVTYA1wthe bosch 063 battery on there is a bargain. 063 so should be ample (ha ha) for a saloon. That size is common to about a third of cars on the road (or was) so always cheap, plus 4 year guarantee etcsaying that the 075 is a little extra if worried. I wouldn't be. DJB_Harvey
I use a O65 on my PI ... Works fine ! But I think the correct alternative for a Mk1 is an O69 .

Lord Sorbington
Any battery which will fit will do but take care, as the orientation of the terminals on some modern batteries means that you may need to extend the earth lead to make it fit. I got one from Partco for about £45.

They will deliver free, or easier often to pickup at local shop. Don't just go there , you will get charged full whack.
