Mr Elsie
Hi allJust trying to sort my carbs out having been running very rich for about the last 2 years.Couple of questions:The needle that comes down from the air piston one number 2 carb is slightly at an angle. There is some rubbing to one side and it looks like it's to do with how the needle is located into its holder (tab that bends to lock it in place opposed to the other one that has a pin). Does this matter?Carbs are 150 cdse.Other question is the air piston has two holes in the bottom. Which way should these be facing? Side on, engine side or otherway.Final question. The mixture is set with one of the special tools. As a guide how far down or up should I set the needles to then start the tuning of the mixture. If I can have a starting point I can then adjust from there.
DougBGT6
You mention special tool adjustment, which makes me think you have top adjusting Strombergs? These have biased needles and should rub on one side. The vent hole is towards the throttle butterfly. There are three turns on the adjustment, wind it right up then down two turns should put you in the right area. Here is a very useful site describing 175s which are very similar.http://www.buckeyetriumphs.org/technical/Carbs/CarbsI/CarbsI.htm
Mr Elsie
Great link.. Cheers. One more question, I turned it in and then out 2 turns but still really rich. Can you just confirm that if the needle is all the way out that will mean mixture is weak or is it other way.
don cook1
How about the choke, difficult to line up if its been taken off.
Mr Elsie
Not aware choke has been off before as never really touched carbs since I've had it. Any checks I can do to ensure its not on as when I pull cable it does engage the choke.
don cook1
Strombergs have a weird choke arrangement (only fitted to one carb on my pairing), I took the choke gizmo off and there wasn't anything to locate it back i.e. it could go on any direction. DougBGT6
Surely there are two bolt holes that have to line up? (Don't call me Shirley! Boom! Boom!) Also there is a pipe from the carb with the choke to the carb without so that both carbs get the benefit of the choke. Or the starting assist, as I've been corrected to call it! don cook1
If I remember correctly, between the "starter box" cover and body of the carb is a disc with a series of holes that line up and its this inner bit which can be fitted either way. It may be that the holes aren't doing what they are meant to. I've had SUs for quite a while so I might be off beam on this.

Correct for CDS type as fitted to Vitesse mk2. Don't know about CDSE type.
DougBGT6
I have CDSE and yes they do.
DougBGT6
Since recommending the Buckeye site on Tuesday I noticed on Wednesday it was down. It's still down. Anybody know anything about it?
