Steveant1
Hi. All I’m new to this club and I own a triumph herald and the sunroof needs replacing . I can see that there is runners head lining extra. Is there any advice on the best way to go about it. Or plans photos of how to do it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
glang
Sorry cant help on the job but first have you sourced a new sunroof as they are horrendously expensive! Even second hand they are so sought after that even in only reasonable condition they go for hundreds...
Wendy Dawes
Hi Steve May I suggest you find a local car trimmer to do this as it’s very specialised and the sunroof has tensioners along the sides which usually need replacing otherwise the roof will not sit correctly on its runners or in the car roof frame, As long as the actual sliding sunroof frame is in good condition a trimmer will do this quite easily , not sure of cost but I suspect around £200/£250 Removal is quite easy, undo it at the front, open it 1/3rd of the way, undo the retaining screws at the back, open it again but only from one side so it ‘twists’ on the frame then you can just lift it out . Hooe this is of some help installation is simply the reverse Edited March 27 by Wendy Dawes

Wendy Dawes
They all need more work than you think once you get them home, I’ve had mine since 2020 and still needs work, just taking the engine out for a rebuild as we think the big end bearing has spun 🙄 your car looked not too bad but the sunroofs are nearly ajways in need of repair, I managed to get one on eBay but I did end up paying as much as it would have cost to get mine re-covered. It’s a matter of getting your car how you want it and not how anyone else thinks it should be, I’ve lost my patience on more than one occasion but I’ve still got Mabel lol .. they’re old cars so we must try to preserve them . I hope you have hours of fun and can withstand the odd times when you might feel a little frustrated . Keep going Steve 👍
Kevin R
If you are interested, the current series of Dream Car Fixers features a Triumph Herald. The presenters replace the soft top during the program and make it look quite easy !!! 😂 although I have suspicions about the authenticity of what they actually do. In a different episode they refurb an original SU Morris Traveller fuel pump. At the final reveal this has morphed into a very new looking replacement unit complete with a bright yellow SU sticker on it.🤔

Do the tensioners apply only to the the earlier Britax sunroofs, eg, 12/50, which has four separate, bottom frame pieces? (rather than the 70's ones, which I gather are a one piece square section ?). I have been slowly looking out for an earlier one (they seem much rare than the later ones) to fit to my 67 Vit Saloon, though if it doesn't happen, that's ok (just a perfection item) . I did buy a later one and did some work on it, though sold it on, as the handle is so much more 70's, which I didn't quite like for this car. Are the tensioners available new, do you know? Thanks, Dave
Wendy Dawes
I only know from removal and refitting the one on Mabel my 1965 12/50, about the side tensioners as far as I know they are renewed when the sunroof is refurbished or a new cover is fitted as original ones are very weak webbing type fabric, so cord ones are usually the replacement, don’t know about later ones . Don’t know about availability though but there is a company in Kings Lynn who might advise it’s MFR Classic cars 01553 844004 or 07970 785284 Edited April 4 by Wendy Dawes

Ah, thanks Wendy. I'm aware of the tensioning fabric that runs in a channel, each side, in the top cover. I was misunderstanding, thinking it was some metal bracing brackets that joined the main frame side sections, to the sides of the roof. I thought I once saw a diagram/picture of these (3 each side), though this could be by my imagination?
