The brakes on the car seem to work ok and pull up straight but seem to need a lot of pushing on the pedal.
Yesterday took it for a run and had to brake suddenly from speed when a tractor pulled out, suddenly the brakes pulled very badly to the left, as this was a fen road with the usual ditch by the road so it was a bit scary...
Tried the brakes again and they seem fine until you have push hard then they start to pull badly to the left.
Any ideas? sticking piston, could it be a rubber hose? or something else?
any suggestions welcome...

Could be anything as you say. Calliper or flexible hose are the most likely culprits. I was going to suggest the servo not working until the pulling to one side thing and if only one side works that'll explain the extra effort to stop you're experiencing. To be honest, as the car is new to you and if you don't know their age you may as well replace all the flexible hoses anyway. Pad wear will show which side and if it's a piston it'll have one pad with no wear. You know how to check all the other bits.

Hi Mike,
previous replies cover nearly all the points very well.
New flexible hoses on all four corners.
Adjust the rears - although these play less of a part in severe braking.
Check the front wheel bearings for play - knock back may play a part.
Check the pads and discs for poor contact etc.
