Straight Six
Last night I noticed that there is lateral movement in the off side track rod of my Vitesse’ steering rack. Annoying as this was a ‘reconditioned’ unit fitted less than 12,000 miles ago. 🤔Anyway, can this paly be taken up by shims? I seem to remember reading somewhere that it is possible, but can’t see any shims in this area on any of the exploded diagrams available on the net. glang
Do you mean theres side to side play in the bar that comes out rack casing? If thats it I believe theres a sort of brass lump in the housing that rubs on the rack and obviously wears with usage. I was told years ago they werent available separately although you would hope reconditioners would get them from somewhere as its an important item! Believe I read someone makes modified racks for some vehicles that does away with this problem but cant remember much about it
Straight Six
Basically, if I grab hold of the track rod I can move it towards & away from the centre of the car. The actual rack doesn't move and there is no such play on the near side.
glang
well that sounds like the ball joint between the end of the rack and the track rod has play in it and these are adjustable. It sounds like maybe the shims have been left out so giving excess play....
Pete Lewis
yes the spherical cup on the end of the rack under the gaitor is shimmed easy to undo and add or remove , the shims sit behind the inboard ball socket cup pete
Nick Jones
As above. Cups, shims, lock washers etc available from Chris Witor. Might even manage it without removing the rack from the car.Nick
glang
Straight Six, you know the original Triumph workshop manual is available online? Its got all the drawings of the rack and many other goodies (although not all of them perfectly clear)
Straight Six
Thanks, I'll give Chris Wittor a ring.I've got a manual but it's not readily accessible (long story...) I'll also try and dig that out this weekend if I get time. I agree it will make things a lot easier.
