Andy Borris
Am I right in thinking that the lump of rubber at the top of the steering shaft (in the engine bay) on MK1 and power steering cars, is replaced by a metal UJ on MK2 non power cars? And I can fit the UJ in place of the rubber on a MK1 with MK2 power steering?ThanksAndy
estately
Hi Andy, Ive just fitted power steering from a mk2 car to my mk1, including the lower shaft, and the top joint was still the same rubber one as my mk1. I'm pretty sure thats the way they are. Seems like a weak point in the design.Ken
Nick Jones
I think you can put the Mk2 non PAS one there instead if you want to. Common mod as the current crop of rubber couplings don't seem to last well.Nick
DJB_Harvey
You cannot fit the solid Mk2 shaft with uj's if you've got PAS fitted as it's too long .

Andy Borris
If I do throw away the rubber coupling, will the metal UJ fit my MK1 column? I'm going to throw the present rubber coupling, it's knacked, just wondering if I can fit the UJ, not a fan of rubber couplings which can split!Andy
andy thompson
Mk2 manual coupling (two steel UJ's ) definitely fits a Mk1I wonder is the Stag PAS coupling (two metal UJ with a larger bottom spline for PAS) will fit a Mk1 or 2 with PAS - pretty sure it will
