  1. Hi I have had 2 NGK plugs fail in under 6000 miles. Is this normal for modern ones, as I don't remember this happening back in the day?. Thanks Dave
  2. Hi Looking at a factory, Smiths gauge info sheet, it appears this should have a coil/s at each end to absorb vibration. Mine doesn't and is probably brittle by now. Any issue do you think please?. Good Xmas to all. Thanks, Dave
  3. Thanks How do the arms remove off the splines please?. Haynes says pull them off the splines and to refit, push down until they click into place. Just wondering if they just pull off, or is there a tiny spring clip thingy that to be pushed in to release. Cheers, Dave
  4. Hi Scotty. Did you mean leave the wipers on to see where they drop? Bit confused. Is the contacts setting different from the manual about setting drop, which from what I remember is about the rotation of the curved cover (maybe the same adjustment?). Cheers, Dave
  5. I love the styling of vit/herald. Though. From a couple of angles, say about 30 degrees out from the sides viewing back or front, from a distance, it looks very bulky from waist to bottom. Will have another view of the roof line. One thing that didn't work for me, was when rover did the P5  saloon with the coupe lowered roof. Cheers, Dave
  6. I bought a front/rear Polybush kit from Canley. Quite a bit cheaper than other suppliers. Previous research suggested they were good. As well as wishbones., they include steering rack mounts/diff bushes which I haven't used yet and maybe one or 2 others. Can't remember. Don't think they include shock bushes. I think my only mistake was thinking my original rubber ones were past there best, as they were deteriorating at the ends/outsides. Apparently the original rubber ones last for ages and be good on the inside even though they can appear shot visually. Dave
  7. Second Dave Twigger. His advice solved my problem (old pressure relief valve o rings had hardened). Nice bloke. Cheers, Dave
  8. Hi Are compression dry/wet tests a fool proof way of diagnosing ring/piston/bore or head wear or a good starting point, please. Thanks, Dave
  9. Looking on the net, Moss sell Gates Barricade for £7 a metre. Would this be fake do you think. (not Moss faking I must add). Cheers, Dave
  10. Straying a bit here, but. Is it normally something within the electrics that ignites fuel. If so what may be the  main culprits?. Cheers, Dave
  11. Thanks Rob That's about what I have now, the way I have alternatively earthed it so hopefully getting enough advance. The screw not moving with heat and just chewing up more, so live with above for now. There is a hole on the plate, near the screw under the crimping tab for the original earth wire. Don't know what this is for?, but maybe use a self tapper in this?. Cheers, Dave
  12. Hi, and thanks a lot for your replies. Just a question please.  How far from rest to max in normal running, does the points plate move around on vacuum advance please (roughly in mm at the outside edge of points plate, would mean more to me than degrees). Thanks, Dave
  13. Hi Don't know what carbs you have. It's a pretty easy DIY thing on pre emmision Strombergs (don't know about others) as long as the bodies aren't worn where the spindles go through). The only fiddley bit as I remember is separating the connecting rod ball joint things (tapping out one of the rolled steel pins). Not sure if the ball joints are available new, if yours are shot. Buck Eye Triumph have in depth re build info, on the net. If you don't want to DIY, then carb specialists will re build, maybe cheaper than that E bay price (I would imagine they are refurbs). Dave
  14. Thanks original screw is still in the plate, though mullered head and tight/rusted. Using an alternative earth wire connection though not ideal. Will take plate off and try some heat to remove screw intact if poss, then try and make head good/find another. Self tapper was last resort. Cheers, Dave
  15. Hi Had problems with J type not engaging when switched/not disengaging when switched off, though engaging when disconnected. After advice from Dave Twigger (Overdrive spares) I cleaned a replaced all o rings in solonoid and o rings in pressure relief valve. Fiddley, though good article by Buck Eye Triumph on net. Been working fine for 4 years now. Dave
  16. Cheers Guys Wondered about a self tapper myself. Sounds a good bodge. Ta, Dave
  17. Hi Does anyone know the size of that funny little screw (well mine is) that fastens the earth wire (from side of dizzy body) to the points plate?, please. Thanks, Dave
  18. Hi This is standard Lucas starter on Vitesse. It has started to sometimes make a grating noise for a second or so when turned on then disengages. Doesn't feel like it's turning engine. Then it will be ok on second attempt It can do this on a cold or hot start. It's a different thing from when it sometimes tries to start from cold for a second then disengages. Starter is not loose and starter pinion and flywheel ring gear looked very good about 5000 miles ago. Starter pinion was also clean and free moving on shaft at this time. Any ideas please. Thanks, Dave
  19. Not sure about mainshaft bearing surface, but Mike Papworth re did my layshaft gear bearing surface. I think it was a remanufactured/new layshaft that caused the problem as G/B had not done that many miles since a previous rebuild. It was rebuilt with a good, used layshaft. Dave
  20. Hi Sorry. Mine is 2 Litre, that has the springs for main piston fitted (don't think springs are fitted to dashpots) and the lighter diaphragm weight/flange. Dave
  21. Hi. Had this with mine. After a lot of fettling with new carb parts, now have brown/sooty around city, grey on a run which is better. Don't really understand the dashpot thing to produce more mixture for sudden acceleration , as its slowing down the main piston (which will let less air, but also presumably at the same time,   let less fuel through the jet hole?). Cheers, Dave
  22. Hi After 4 years of ownership of car driven all year round, that I think was much more polished than driven, my paintwork has mellowed to a less shiny finish which I like. I would like to protect the paint, without making it very shiny. Any issues with rubbing engine oil onto paintwork (like they do on old trucks, landly's and cars even older than mine) please?. Any advice great, thanks. Dave
  23. Thanks I didn't know anything about this, hence my original question "is it important?" Not really an obsession. Anyway, nice to know it's something I don't have to anything about, for a change. Cheers, Dave
  24. Hi and thanks I think I read somewhere that PVC valve also acts as flame trap. Could well be incorrect info. Cheers, Dave
  25. Hi Not got one of these fitted on Vitesse. Looking at pictures on the net, it looks like a square metal plate fitted, with a gap between R/C breather hole. Is that about right. How important is it. I have the original PCV valve fitted which I thought may serve this purpose. Any help, great please. Cheers, Dave
