TR7/8 Brake Rotors/Calipers Q

I have had some quotes from specialist brake suppliers - see my blog which can be reached from the home page of the CT website for the detail but here's some inf-

One specialist supplier  suggested a cheaper alternative to the works set up using "off the shelf" AP racing calipers and having a disc made up along with all the brackets etc to mount the caliper to the suspension.

Cost of this cheaper option? £870 + VAT and that doesn't include pads!!!

The second supplier has given a quote for replicating the works set up - including VAT but only for the calipers and discs comes to £1235!!!!!!

I can't see me taking up these options unless my numbers come up :-/

Neither will be bidding on the set up on ebay at the moment - although it's vented discs and 4 pot calipers which look like the Rimmer Brothers kit, it is salvaged from a car.

I am not going to buy second hand brake components - sorry but that's just the way I feel :-/

i would just like to point out that as soon as you fit new brakes to your cars, they become "used, or second hand"! Providing they conform to spec, and you've either rebuilt or checked them thoroughly, there really is nothing wrong with using "pre-owned" brake parts. my mini has been using metro trurbo four pot calipers and discs for years now with no problems at all. Also, would you change the calipers and wheel cylinders as a matter of course every time you bought another car!
Just a thought!!! :)

Ok - I have now bought the BMW discs and Volvo 4 pot calipers.

See my blog for a pic of the boxes - not revealing the contents yet :P

Having said that the BMW vented discs look massive in comparison to the weedy TR7 discs and the Volvo 4 pot calipers are also miles bigger - they also have a tasteful gold metallic finish which should look great behind the miniltes 8)

Oh - and also trial fitted a sumpguard - in theory I'll be taking it off again to improve the fit bit will I actually get round to it :-/

Quoted from SprintV8 csopelario
You have a 76 Toyota Celica liftback

Please Tell me which one you have,

Sorry about being so late... there is only one type of liftback post-75 Celicas  (the ra28<-Japan/UK/Oz and the ra29<-US no differences except motors) ... all pretty much look the same but the tail lights on some during various years. Suspension and drivetrain all same.

I will post pix of my celica (1, since this isnt a celly site)) and our TR7 (a few) as soon as I can.

Just to update my project, I have installed the stock brembo discs for the tr7 and added EBC green stuff, flushed new brake fluid (Castrol LMA) and had rear drums cleaned up... still plenty of pad left, almost more than 80%)

Anyways, rubber lines were replaced with new ones... stainless braided will be added in a few months, these are just temporary. Propotion valve remains stock, but will be changed to a TSI unit soon (maybe in 1-2months)

Currently the car is getting its vinyl redone with the rust killed. The sunroof will be changed form the slideback to a simple pop-up. I frankly dont care for teh interior, all the body work/interior work is being done so I could drive it in the rain! hahaha,

Next I will install some new KYB dampers, new stock springs, and poly bushings all around everywhere the tired rubber exists.

After that the clutch/flywheel will be changed, as well as all the fluids out of all the mechanical components... I am helping my brother out on this project, for it is his car ;)

Thanks,

What's a TSI unit?

The rest of your plans are along the same lines as I have done with mine.  I think you will still want to upgrade the brakes tho if you use the car competitively.

The calipers with pads.

I now need to get some brake pipes made up so that I can fit the whole set up to BRP.

I won't be doing this now though until after the autotest - never fit something untested just before an event ;)

Apologies if this has been mentioned already...

Sorry, forgot to say reduced to what? reduced to £995 actually which is one third cheaper.. lot of money but you could easily spend that on body repairs if you don't stop in time!

The TR went back to the paint shop today... new page up at

Thanks for the pictures Steve.  I hope you manage to get the car to the 2005 Drivers' National so I can see it for real  8)

Any chance it could make it to the TR Register International?  You would be very welcome.

Malcolm.

My set up is now on the car and the good news is that the discs and callipers fit within my 13" minilites ;)

They should have done with all the advice and measuring etc but it's still a relief.

The downside is I can't stop brake fluid leaking from the pipework. :'(

So, with little time available to me as I am off to France with work and La Carrerra looming in two weeks time, along with another autotest two weeks after that, the car will be with my local garage to fix and MOT.

Hopefully all will be sorted out by next weekend but the credit card will take a bashing ::)

Got the car back from the garage after 5PM on a bank holiday weekend!

They made new brake pipes and then when they swapped the calipers over because some idiot had firtted them to the wrong side ??) they were able to bleed the brakes.

I have only managed 12 miles but they certainly work but the pedal doesn't feel any different. Obviously they need to bed in but the real proof of the pudding is if I can brake hard repeatedly without any brake fade.

There's also alot more brake fluid to be displaced in the calipers now so I would probably nreed to change the master cylinder too - not something I want to do in a hurry.
