andyc
Once again my ride got its own ride home. On the back of a recovery vehicle. The fan belt has gone and I can't find a replacement. The one that is on the car (or was) is a Ferodo 4931. I have tried Halfords etc and the belts appear too wide at the top and not small enough at the bottom. I tried the closest one in length but it was was too short and I didn't have enough adjustment on the alternator. I've tried googeling the number but had no success. Does anyone out there have any ideas of where else I can look without having to visit every spares shop in W yorkshire? Cheers Andy
GT6 M
Andy, the belts in Halfords, are numbered .ie 1066, 1076 ect, this is the actual length,if the one you got wont fit, ,would it fit if it were ..actually on..!!! ike ..inside the pullys ..a little ..encourage ment no hurts, by this i mean putting it over the pullys and then turning the crank over to get it onI have similar pfobs, since I altered me Alternator position, and this is the only way to get it on, and once it owa the pully flange, its slack enough, so its not pulling tight when no adjusted,go try it and see, rgds Marcus
andyc
Thanks for the feedback, but I did try that, I can't even get close.Andy
StagNL
Stag? Fan belt? Fan is (standard) mounted on the crank in the Stag. What belt are you talking about?Alternator or power steering? I'm guessing the former. Why go through a generic supplier when there are sufficent ones tha will offer the correct item you seek?Julian
Alex
Its a rover engined stag Julian.Unfortunately as such things are a bit different under the bonnet dependant on who did the engine swap.Alex
Royboy66
bit of string in place of broken belt, remove string and measure it ? ;)
piman
Hello Roy, good idea, but I think belts are measured for length at their mid point. It may be more accurate with something that is near the belt width (mid point as I say), perhaps some flexible electric cable about 8mm in diameter?Alec
ferny
Then set it all to the end of it's adjustment, put the string on and then when it comes to putting it all back together put the adjustment to it's shortest setting.
PJM
Found this site by searching on google (other search engines are available). Not sure if your belt is V4931 but it lists all the dimensions. http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/Tables/FerodoNum5.htm
Velocita Rosso
Or...tie the string in a knot and then take the string to a stockist and say " I want one that size"

piman
Hello Partsaver, "it doesnt matter if you use thin string or thick wire as it will only make a couple of MM difference."Are you sure?, tapers are notoriously awkward to measure, as any machinist will tell you, a slight skim makes a big difference to how far it fits into it's mate. As Julian says, " Why go through a generic supplier when there are sufficent ones tha will offer the correct item you seek?" There are plenty of specialist around to supply correctly first time.Alec
Clive
A few mm on a fanbelt seems to make a big difference, from when I tried a few spares I had and although close were outside of adjustment. I like the idea of something to replicate the actual thickness of the belt.....
CharlieB
Cut an old fan belt, wrap it round & measure the gap. "One of these X inches longer please..."
Vitesse2l
Don't suppose Andyc has the old belt? If it's not lying on a road...Could measure that. Some motor factors keep their old catalogues to help cross-referencing part numbers. Might be worth a try. partsaver
There should be enough adjustment at the alternator to overcome any differnce if the whatever is used to measure it but i do like the idea of using an old belt which is too long to measure it that way you cant really go wrong
andyc
Thanks to everyone for their input, seems as though I could have created a difference of opinion.I think I may have resolved the problem, I contacted someone on ebay who hold a number of Ferodo fan(drive) belts he tells me the 4 was added to a V931 to denote that it was a newer design, but basically it is a v931. I have ordered one up so I shall see if he is right. Trouble is I won't get around to it till the weekend after next. Doesn't time fly.Andy
