Hi Guys, I have a mountney 13' steering wheel and sometimes when I go round a tight corner the horn goes off. Normally when I am behind an old granny, policeman group of lads in an escort ..... Presumably the earthing pin under the centre cap is shorting out somehow though looks fine to me. Any ideas cheers.

This will be my first post then – going from being a lurker to a contributor!

Try to move back the entire steering wheel and boss a few mm (loosening the clamp on the steering shaft while moving!).  Had the same problem on my spitfire mk 3; the boss was now and then making a short by touching the slip ring.

Best regards

The clamp to move the column is down near the brake/clutch pedal. If you release the two bolts and allen headed screw you should be able to lide the wheel up a fraction. Not more than a few mm as the horn will not work at all. Not sure of the retightening sequence, but I would guess it is do the two bolts up first then the allen head jobbie. It is supposed to allow the column to "collapse" is an accident.

The allen screw sets the correct tension, so the column will collapse in an impact. It's best to not disturb this when adjusting the column, just loosen the bolts so the column will slide a little, then re-tighten.
Cheers,
Bill.

Hi Guys, Well I think you could be right here my steering wheel boss was so tight to the column that it was actually rubbing. I have slackened those two bolts off at the base of the column and shifted the wheel up a couple of mm so will wait and see. Thanks for the tips would not have thought of that one. And yes you don't need to touch the allen screw.
