Shepsy
My Mk2 Vitesse engine is standard other than an unleaded head and Accuspark ignition- which was fitted by the previous owner. I have adjusted the tappets, balanced the carbs, used a colour tune for the mixture, set the timing to 10deg at idle, new air filters , and checked the carb diaphragms. I start it on choke and it needs to be pushed almost fully in within 30~60 secs. Although it will rev to higher rpm, it seems a little reluctant to do so - possibly with a slight misfire. It also seems to lack some power on hills - whereby I read other owners comments about their car climbing without changing down? To put my mind at ease, I am looking for a good rolling road operator that can set the car up to its optimum. I live in the Worcestershire area and am prepared to travel but it looks like one of the best RR operators is in Essex. Can anyone recommend an “old style” rolling road specialist within a 100mile radius to my location that can help? Many thanks. Pete.
Clive
My gut feeling is that you need to revisit the timing. It is essential to set it by ear rather than a timing mark. Drive the car, light throttle up a sslight incline. Adjust the advance until it just pinks, turn it back a smidge. That will be the best setting. Also check that the vacuum advance and teh mechanical advance work. That does require a timing light... Try http://baileyperformance.co.uk/ , I know he has done a GT6 or 2, and is a decent chap. He spent a day on my injected spitfire, sorted many things the previous tuner hadn't bothered with.
glang
Everything Clive says on ignition and then have another look at mixture as colourtunes can be pretty ambiguous. You can progressively make the mixture weaker going by how the car drives (bogs down on light throttle when too weak) and plug colour.... Think a rolling road for a standard car really is a hammer for a nut! Edited October 13, 2023 by glang
Lemon Hell
I'd agree rolling road for a road car with a standard set up seems unnecessary, I set my Vitesse with the help of colourtune and the mixture seemed spot on but on the road it ran really weak, I replaced the needles and progressively richened the mixture, running a lot better now. Need to make sure everything is tip top, I plan to give my carbs a full overhaul and my Distributor is now on its way to the "distributor doctor" . Shepsy
Clive, gland, and Lemon Hell. I have taken all of your comments on board and will try adjustments as you have suggested. I am also thankful for the Bailey performance link as Telford is only 45 miles away. Many thanks to you all! Pete
yorkshire_spam
I have my tuning done by Peter Burgess - Alfreton DE55 7EZ about 90 miles away from you?
Shepsy
yorkshire_spam. Thank you for your reply. Is that on modified engines or standard road going ones?

Did you replace the needles with the same ones that you removed or did you replace them with richer ones ? Did you replace the jet as well? Is your distributor worn ? Do you currently have electronic ignition? Will it be returned to you with points fitted? Will it retain the standard advance curve?

Mine is modified, but Peter is an old school engine tuner with broad experience from standard road cars through to full race. He's also happy to hear what you want to get out of the tuning, not just tune for max power/soot.
JohnD
Shepsy, I take my SofS to Revingtons, in Bridgewater. Some distance for you, even more for me, but they do know their stuff , and Triumphs. You may have heard that Neil is retiring, and that the business may be sold on. I know no more, so see the Revington TR website for news, and about their Rolling Road Workshop Facilities (revingtontr.com) John
Shepsy
Hello JohnD. I spoke to Neil earlier today - prior to putting this post up. He didn’t mention any retirement but said that he couldn’t do a RR session before mid December. I was hoping to sort it out sooner - therefore asked the guys on here. As always….. Thank you for your help 👍
