1500 propshaft issues

I would be concerned at fitting a longer propshaft, even one that is only 1/4 inch longer.
There are two "fixed" points in the drive train (albeit they are mounted on rubber and have a little movement):  the engine/gearbox and the differential.  If you are squeezing a longer propshaft between the two, then somethng has to give.  Assuming that the propshaft itself cannot compress, then you must be moving the engine and/or diff on its mountings.  This is going to place a high thrust loading onto the bearings in the tail of the gearbox, and the input shaft of the diff.  Neither of these are designed to take high thrust loadings.

There's scope to move the engine fore or aft slightly, as the holes the engine mounts bolt to are slotted. If your engine's set as far back as possible it might be possible to move it forward the quarter inch necessary. If your new propshaft's still OK, that is...

It's possible that it was never fitted new precisely because it was too long! NOS is sometimes the bits the factory set aside.
