Pawel Saladziak
Hi,this week I am going to change the timing belt, first time in my life. I red the hays manual's chapter regarding this procedure dozen of times, watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7A5Wm-3cPiY another dozen times, so now there is time for hearing the good advises from the ones that actually did this my car it 83' mk1 HLS TRIO Maroon Boar

ferny
Remove the spark plugs - it makes rotating the engine easier. Check and double check the manual you are using as often get the spark plug order incorrect, which makes you wonder why it won't start and there are flames spitting out the carbs.Use a good oil safe gasket sealer on the rocker cover gasket. They tend to leak and when they do the timing belt will be destroyed. Had one fail on me for that exact reason and the replacement I put on two years ago got contaminated straight away. I'll replace that at some point... Once you've done it a few times it only takes half an hour to swap them.
Toledo Man
I've only done it once and was easy enough. It might be documented in my Blog. I did it in September 2011 when Becky II's cambelt snapped. The EN4 engine is a non-interference engine so the valves will never hit the pistons.
Pawel Saladziak
Thank you both, I will check the manual again of course. Ferny, can you recommend any particular sealant brand? Is it necessary for me to to have a strobe light?
Toledo Man
You will only need a strobe light for checking the ignition timing. It isn't necessary for a timing belt change. Just make sure the timing marks are lined up once the new belt has been fitted.
Pawel Saladziak
Tried to change the belt today, but it looks in 95% as good as new one, it is both clean and without any wear, only dirt is rusty dust from the flywheel on the belts teeth. I left it like this.
