Velocita Rosso
Quoted from bob dunn Do i have to turn the fly wheel round?? Why do you want to turn the flywheel around?
bob dunn
n0 silly not the fly wheel ,the starter ring . ps don,t want to turn the fly wheel round . The previous owner fitted the starter ring backwards on the flywheel. (2000 engine) . I am going to fit a hi torque starter and it was said that it needed a starter ring mounted the other way round but it does not make sense to me. piman
Hello Bob, which way are the chamfers on the ring gear teeth facing, if towards the gearbox (as for an inertia starter) then yes, ideally you need to turn the ring gear around so the chamfer is forward. You could try it first and see if you have any problems?Alec
bob dunn
Thanks for that Alec http://i.ytimg.com/vi/iTv3AJI9vD0/0.jpg

bob dunn
Ok at last I get it . I did,nt think there was an inertia starter for a 2000.
bob dunn
and to answer the question, the chamfer was away from the engine and pushed at a bit of an angle by the starter motor.
Richard B
Lots of people (myself included) have fitted Hi-Torques to Spitfires without bothering about the ringear.Probably shortens the life of the pinion though.
Sidewaysste
I haven't swapped my ring gear around and it seems to engage ok. Admittedly it's only been on a week. The new starter is worlds better than the lucas original.
