  1. Ok looks like I've found the cause of my knocking noise. I removed the shocks and it disappeared.....may be a struggle to do the rbrr without shocks but cant afford new ones and the noise is really annoying. Cant see what else it can be.... Oh and Ferny thanks for the offer mate,I should have said yesterday but read your offer on my phone and forgot when sat at my computer.I picked a shaft from James Cooper yesterday as I was in his area. Thanks again!
  2. Argh! Fitted another set of rockers today and no change however theres oil getting to the top of the rockers now so thats better. Tappets are a bit quieter and I think I can adjust them some more which will help. Having removed the rockers also enabled me to retorque the head. As for my chatter/rattle.....still there however I'm now wondering if its resonance in the exhaust... I went from wheel barrows to a single pipe, the noise wasnt there before although that was 5 yrs ago so who knows, is this a possibilty? I've just been in the garage trying to locate another knocking type noise at the rear.It only happens when you bounce the rear but on the move its pretty annoying. No joy with it though.I also found when bent down bouncing the car something is sqeaking. Again no idea what...... Drives nicely its just these little irritations now to try and solve :'(
  3. Nick_Jones wrote:That's not good news.  Is the the cause of your mystery rattling noises do you think? Mark came over and had a listen tonight.....he's of the opinion that it may(I'm not holding him to this)be simply a vibration that becomes apparent at 3000rpm but its very difficult to be certain due to the noise o the tappets. I have to be honest I just thought they were badly adjusted although a bit worn.On inspection they looked terrible, the shaft has scores in it deeper than my hacksaw..... The tips maybe could be rectified but I jsut had another look and they actually look a bit slanted too is that the norm ? Obviously I could be reading more into this than is actually there. Could badly worn shaft/rockers etc cause a chatter type rattle as well as tappet rattle?

  5. Found tonight that my rockers and shaft are ruined..... All the rockers faces bar 1 are stepped and the shaft has picked up some crap at some point and badly scored it. The inner faces of the rockers are all scored too.....oh and not sure theres as much oil coming through as there should be......
  6. Had a productive night..... Fitted my new disributor and coil and the car fired first click of the key......should I look at end float? Changed fuel pump due to a seep on the old one leaving an oily trail on the starter. Pads arrived today so I need to do the wheel bearings and change pads, oil trunnions etc then I can test the dizzy 8) Fixed a fault on my wiper linkage this week too. My map light arrived today :'( I asked for a 12" switched light and got told that all theres have switches but an 18" has arrived.Having now checked the website they dont appear to do the 12"......18" is just to big for a spitfire so now need to call them and see what they say :(
  7. michael_charlton wrote:Alex 1155 are better and more readily available Mike I've gone for these on recomendation. To be honest they'd struggle to be worse than the green stuff currently fitted and by what I've heard are a vast improvement. I dont intend to do track days or anything of the like so I'm sure these will suffice. Thanks Alex
  8. All sorted thanks everyone. Ordered the pads and the map light from Rally Design came in at about £70. New dizzy and coil arrived today too 8)
  9. cliftyhanger wrote:I picked an avanti maplight up at stafford for a quid! Doesn't help you though. Of course it does Clive....give ya £2 for it 100% profit ;D
  10. I ordered some 1144 pads last night for my spitfire 1500. I ordered mintex 1144 b533......was that right? Anyway they emailed today to say call them which I did only to be told they didnt have any until a week friday. So I thought I'll just order from someone else......buit nobody appears to have stock. Anyone got any suggestions? Maybe I should just use cheap pads? At £45 inc p&p the wife wasnt happy so I dont want to spend more ideally as I just ordered an new electronic dizzy as well.....and am going to get a map light too. Anyone know a cheap source for avanti map lights....or similar? Thanks Alex
  11. Front wheel bearings to do, front wishbone trunnion holes to weld up,front pads to buy and change. Map light/interior light to buy and fit, screen header chrome trim to seal. Distributor to buy and fit. Few other little bits ..... Not quite sure when I'm going to do it all though......
  12. Well my strange rattly noise may be closer to being solved.... It was suggested this week that it was a distributor related problem so thats where I started asking questions. I asked another forum user that I trust to give me honest advice and no bull. Through a couple of questions we got to the bit where he asked if the rotor arm was touching the cap.....well it is. This we are deducing means my dizzy is dizzier than it should be. So I need a replacement. I've seen them on ebay new and pretty cheap but are those ones any good? Is there another options that in the long term is more cost effective? This will be the second time I've replaced this part :-/ Quite like the idea of one already fitted with an electronic ignition unit o some description..... Thanks Alex
  13. Ok thats great thanks Nick! Alex
  14. my local factors can source me wheel bearing kits from a company called first line. They say there's no guarantee what brand the bearings would be but they'd be guaranteed for 10k Any views? They think they could make me up a set of timkins but would need the individual timkin part no.s. Anyone know them?
  15. I'm wanting to change my front wheel bearings for the rbr,I'm just wondering if all makes etc are equal in quality. I've never changed them in 10 yrs and they dont run 100% smooth but are there any i should avoid? Thanks
  16. Today would probably be good Mark ;D
