Thanks Richard and Bill..... But do your replys contradict each other? I'd have thought to face the diff it would be facing the flange? :-/ Thanks Alex

I need to fit new ujs to my heralds drive shafts and wondered if it matters which way round they go? I've gone for the greaseable type so does the grease nipple face the wheel or the differential?...... Or does it make no difference? Thanks Alex

AlanChatterton wrote:But, if he's only changing the timing chain, why are you telling him things that require the gearbox to be removed? I would use the rope trick to lock the engine. Take out a spark plug, take that piston down to the bottom of its travel, then insert some rope or cord into the spar plug hole. Bring the piston back up and this will safely lock the engine to allow you to put a long bar on the front pulley nut. I think its needs to be about 100lb/ft ish, which is easy with a 3ft breaker bar. To undo or do up, you simply need to consider which side of TDC you should lock the engine. Alan if you remove the starter you can lock the flywheel with a screwdriver easily enough. I tried choking, handbrake and footbrake on my old engine and it still didn't work. I was advised against rope down the bore for risk of bending something.

Before spending out hiring an impact wrench try jamming the ring gear and using a long bar......you may save yourself some money. When refitting make sure it's tight......someone I know had his fall off....twice :B

Animator wrote:hi , I've just done this work on my 13/60 it's very tricky under the A post area as there is a small step up just after the second mounting bracket and also an incut for door clearance - took me ages to get it right! Any pictures by any chance ?

Yes no reason why not just need to work out the best needles. It's all a series of compromises really.

Dave you need an S inlet manifold......long inlets hence the need for an S plenum,This is very thin to clear the inner wing. The S plenum has an outlet at the front about 3" wide that you then put a hose onto into a cylindrical airbox......I didn't fit one to mine I used a k&n type cone filter.......perhaps due to lack of room( it's been a while). If your fitting an antiroll bar cross member then you'll not need to worry about engine mount issues.....just lack of room. Sorry I don't have any pictures :-/

nang wrote:Will the 2 spacers fitted to the mounts on an S fit a Mk1? Tony. The holes are in the wrong place on the cross member. Very simple to modify though.

timbancroft61 wrote:Def think about fitting HS6s onto the car. Ideally use a 2500S inlet manifold. You can then use a 2500S plenum with a cold air feed and air filter. You'll need to either fit an s crossmember or re drill and pack/space engine mounts. Even then the airbox has very little room. You'll then need a air filter housing......may be able to help with that.

I'm sorry Nick but there's something about your car I really don't like! I really don't like the fact it's so far away, most of us are unlikely to ever actually see it! Unless you fancy bringing it over for a Round Britain ? It's looking great!!

If you remove the oil feed please make sure oil is getting to your rockers and that the feed holes are clear in the head. As Tim had issues after removing his, normally it's not a problem but make sure!

If the mot flags up so much as an incorrect letter you'll have a letter from the dvla questioning you. You then have to go back to a garage get them to write a letter ( and pay for it I expect) just to tell the dvla what your being told here. It's up to you but if it was mine I'd just knock the tag off with a grinder/ chisel and be done with it.

The food that was to be provided was discussed at the drivers meeting. Personally I never went hungry and would prefer costs stayed as low as possible.
