I'm finding that the adjuster has to go far enough to click before the wheel will turn.thats possibly two flats?

What fun I've been having! I put my 'spare' spitfire I or an mot and it failed on a few very minor points. Wiper blade split, washer not working, emissions( choke was stuck open) oh and it had almost no rear brakes. So everything addressed and took it back, brake imbalance across axle. I'd adjusted them up so was a bit surprised this time......the first time I'd taken it for a fail sheet to work from but as it was so minor I've decided to just get it through and fix the rest later. So today I've gone back again.......much better but not enough! Single line system 1500 spitfire...... New shoes, new cylinders, new drums and new adjusters. I'm adjusting so they lock up without handbrake connected then backing off till they turn. Attach handbrake and all done......except it's not enough! I've now adjusted it all again swapped drums, bled all brakes( daughter pressed the pedal so fingers crossed it was enough...)and hoping to get it back again tomorrow...... Grrr! Rant over

Around the top of the bore there should be a lip.....recessed bore. Yours doesn't appear to have it yet your gasket has the rings that fit into the recess. Hence its blown.....unless we can't see the recesses? Buy a payen gasket and try again

I ran my mk1 with a 3.7:1 without issues......in fact it was very nice ;) I did have a 3.45:1 to fit to it but never bothered and passed it on when I sold the car. My theory was that it would help with economy but to be fair......probably not much. For what it's worth the best economy I ever got from mine was late 20's.....ragging it to Stafford but then a more sensible drive back. I wonder if ragging gained the mpg or the sensible drive home? ;D Just get the engine in Dave and then form an opinion :)

Oh that does look nice, love the colour combination with those wheels. I'm itching to know if it's a stripe or a two tone finish!!! ;D Have you asked a local tyre company if they are aware of a tyre that has less sidewall protrusion? I do hope you solve it! Alex Have you considered a lowering block? By lowering the rear, the wheels will go in at the top!

Personally I wouldn't fit an oil pressure gauge.....they just drive you mad! I fitted one when I rebuilt my engine......now I'm so paranoid I wish I'd never done it. Don't get me wrong it's nice to know alls healthy....but what's healthy, what's not, what's ideal.....argh! Car looks great by the way. My parents live in britainy and dad took his stag with him when he went. Quite a strong classic car community where they are by all accounts. Alex

I'm sure nobody finds you ignorant .... Stubborn perhaps for not just giving up and fitting different wheels ;) However that said, I'm sure most people on here have had their moments. Even people who like originality can be very stubborn when insisting parts are wrong. Have you posted a picture of your wheels .... I've not seen one ? I think my only concern is if you spend even more money having the arches done and new tyres and still they don't fit. It's your money, your choice and your vision that your trying to achieve. Good luck I really hope it works out ..... You stubborn bugger ;D Alex

herald948 wrote:I would hope it IS safe, but if you don't mind my asking? WHY do this? I'm not 100% convinced that it IS safe; even if it is, you're changing the final drive ratio for the worse (unless you like slightly quicker acceleration at the expense of decent cruising speed). I'd have gotten different wheels and let it all go at that, but your mileage may vary, etc., etc. ;D It shouldn't effect the final drive or the steering providing the profile/ rolling circumference matches the original tyres. As for steering, if this car left the factory with 145, 155tyres then he can go down a couple of if this without going below this as he currently has 175s. Having said this my concern would be that after all this work and added expense they still touch when the car comes out of a dip and the wheel travels. If you've ever followed a small chassis car and seen the way the wheels move it's quite surprising.

The nipples went in before but the angles all wrong to clear the yoke now. These are gkn ujs?
-
I can't even get the nipple into one of the ujs.... Didn't try the other although it looked a bit more likely ..... Do people use the long ones that come with the ujs or fit different ones for greasing?
-
Oh dear..... I've fitted the uj so the nipple points away .... But there's no room for the nipple??
