  1. Oh boy I NEED ANOTHER PROJECT. I need to live to 300 to complete the ones I have. ANYHOOO. Decided that instead of buying seat covers for my late spec Mk3 Gt6 (the carb car) seats I will make my own full leather interior, seats, dashtop, armrest etc etc. So bought a full leather hide in a very nice dark slate grey. Also a 1950's heavy duty sewing machine (modified it, bigger motor LED work light bulb) As my mate says "Same as his cars, bigger engine, better lights". Questions, Anybody done this ? Know of some of the pitfalls ? Know of any other options to attach covers to seat frame, other than the PITA hog rings ? There has to be a spring clip suitable for this purpose. Ideas ?   Laurence   Laurence

    MOT or not

Clive the thing is REALLY UNCLEAR and contradicts itself. especially as I have a Sixfire 2500 registered as a 1500 Spit with the 2.5.(2500 S Gt6 Spitfire hybrid). My reading of it is that she needs MOT. (Not applicable in NI anyway). Had she been registered as a Gt6 she would be exempt. I could put her on one of the Gt6 log books I have. However personalised number on her so that rules that idea out completely. Laurence

    MOT or not

Copy and paste from V112 Engine – alternative cubic capacities of the same basic engine and alternative original equipment engines (if the number of cylinders in an engine is different from the original it is unlikely to be alternative original equipment).   Laurence

    MOT or not

Because the engine is of non original type / six instead of eight cylinders. You need an Mot. Sorry.
  5. Did the owner of the Escrot not notice ?   Laurence
  6. I would not do that the leads will not stretch🙂 If you do decide to do this get a marine plastic battery box and use 35^2 welding cable. Laurence

    fibreglass bonnet

The one I have on the Sixfire is EXACTLY the same Honeybourne Mouldings took many hours hard work to bring it up to horrible. And a bucket load of filler round the power bulge Obviously the mould taken from a Spitfire bonnet with a Gt6 bulge THROWN ON.   Laurence
  8. Ring gaps really only need to be staggered does not matter how.   Laurence
  9. Indeed there are three lengths. Middle length up the sides. Short to the front. Long to the rear where the holes in the sump are braced.   Laurence
  10. The stock 3/8 wheel studs are really not up to the job for these wheels. Upgrade to M12 ( Note You might need to drill a hole in the rear brake back plates and on the front grind a flat on the stud heads ) and use the MG wheel nuts as these are specific to the large wheel nut hole size. BTW some Ford also use the large hole wheel nut setup. Laurence
  11. Well the 5 ltr tin of paint arrived KICKED STUPID BY THE COURIER but most of it still in the tin USELESS CXXTS. Laurence
  12. Weld the hole round again and drill.   Laurence
  13. Wilson Leandrum and Weir it is Colin. I missed the DPD delivery and on DPD web site to re deliver their name was listed. I read that bad review but could not find anything else negative on the web. I shall give them a ring re the Beamer.   Thanks Laurence
  14. You got any idea who that could be Colin ? I have asked for a phone number but got no response to that request. I would like to inquire about clear over base metallic for the BMW. Next project on my extensive list of jobs after the Sixfire. The Beemer is the next most complete car I have and relatively easy to get out of the way. Basically only just a wheel arch repair panel on the passenger rear quarter and a couple of little Mot jobs. Oh yes, and remove the full race chip from the ECU to clear the emissions test  Well it would not be one of my cars without competition parts on.   Laurence
  15. Design Design ? It is not a FN design John. Just vent oles to allow the release of pressure from under the bonnet also to aid cooling and allow cooler air to the carbs. As far as I am concerned Job done and out of the way, apart from rounding off the edges prior to paint. More pressing stuff needs to be done on the Sixffire first. Engine and box, to refit, a new Quaife to fit, finish welding on the new rear guards, also a bit of rot repair near the boot floor. THEN PAINT ! But thanks anyway. Laurence
  16. Thanks. The bay of much evil Nick 30mm X 30mm sheet. A sheet does the two vents, available in different gauges 1.2 mm if I remember correctly. ( Pretty sure a stainless steel stockholder will have much bigger.) Cut in half on my sheer, otherwise it would have been a bitch to cut. Laurence
  17. Thank you Colin. Great to see you have SAL out again too.                                                                                                                                                                                                      Laurence
  18. Here I go digging up the new 40 year exemption. You guys on the mainland are lucky You know exactly where you stand with the new exemptions. Here in Northern Ireland we have no idea whether the 40 year exemption will happen here or not. All mot over here we are examined by government agency (No garage repair agendas). There is much speculation going about re this some saying the 40 year will not come in here due to our non sitting assembly means it cannot be signed off on. The NI car club association over here The AOVC Have on their web site that the exemption will not happen here and that CARS COMING IN FROM THE MAINLAND MUST GET AN MOT IMMEDIATLY ! Personally I feel both those statements to be pure nonsense. Fact is we already have the pre 1960 rule so really it is nothing more than a date change, not a change in the legislation. Mot website is equally unclear if in fact it will happen in Northern Ireland, Yet we are UK registered also through Swansea. Mainland mot's apply here also NI mot's apply on the mainland. Our Mot inspectors even Swansea are speculating on this issue also our police the PSNI. Bottom line is NOBODY HERE KNOWS. We shall just have to wait till the 20'th   Laurence
  19. Just bought last night 5 ltrs of Mimosa yellow cellulose paint off the dreaded Bay of evil £ 87 free delivery https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1LT-CELLULOSE-GLOSS-PAINT-mixed-to-code-silver-red-blue-white-fast-drying/351180392340?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649. The last time I bought cellulose paint in a motor factors it was £ 30 per ltr and that was quite some years back. HAS TO BE WORTH A SHOT.   Laurence
  20. Re commissioning the Sixfire 2500 after a long lay up. The bonnet was removed for an overdue engine refresh. Pic shows new oles in FG bonnet with 304 stainless steel mesh and allen domed head screws. Screws will be exposed and contrasting to achieve that modified look. Do not want her confused with an ordinary Spit Mesh will be removed again prior to a repaint, dry build only. Laurence
  21. Put on a pair of HS6's. I really fancy putting a pair of HS8's on one of my 2500 engines. That is if my mate can dig them out for me as he promised. Laurence
  22. As Clive says. The Triumph six is technically two three cylinder engines and needs to be treated as such. Webers are a different story technically a carb barrel per cylinder as is PI. Three single barrel carbs is not the way to go. Not on a Triumph six anyway. Laurence
  23. Colin the side bearings with crown wheel removed you shim it till it is too tight then remove shims to the point it is not. You then refit the crown wheel and shuffle the shims to correct the mesh. The pinion is the opposite but same principal, you add shims to loosen instead of removing them. Laurence

    Timing help

Advance your distributor till revs rise. Retard distributor just to the point where revs drop again. That should be right.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Laurence
  25. Goes in alright with a tap from the shaft end of a hammer. I have never damaged a shim doing this but there is always a first time.   Laurence
