    Timing help

Thanks for your input guys, Nick the distributor has been complety overhauled and is now electronic, and yes I can feel the wee springs as i twist it, John, I have stuck a bit of masking tape on the dizzy side and marked it where Number one lead is, then popped the plugs out again,  Had a look at ebay Found an old plug popped it in the lathe and ten mins later I have a piston stop gauge, I machined a ball end on a long allen bolt popped it in the old plug, wound the engine over and with a DTI on the allen bolt checked the timing marks all okay, I had to rotate the bolt so that the piston would slide it out of the old spark plug body. tomorrow is a new test it day I shall keep you all informed, thanks again guys

    Timing help

Thanks guys,  that's what I've done the distributor has been upgraded o electronic, I have twisted the distributor until the revs rise then start to drop off, then backed it off a tadge, then checked with the strobe and its way off the scale on the bottom pulley, so I think the previous owner must have replaced the pulley, when I road test I still get a pinking noise, the carbs aren't spot on yet as I need to stick a few miles on then it's off to the rolling road, I am trying to get it as close as posilble before then

  6.   Hi Steve I used these guys, http://www.paint-strip.co.uk they made a first class job with photo's through all the work carried out,  and no nasty chemicals were used, and they are in your neck of the woods, I had to drive up from the south coast, there are photos of my car on here, I would post again but I haven't sussed that out yet, I can email you some if you wish

  14. "The Gods alone know what else is connected/not connected... I'm now wondering where I can safely put the multi-meter test probes!" You can put your test probes anywhere
  15. I sent my dizzy to http://h-h-ignitionsolutions.co.uk/technical.htm  they rebuilt it and fitted an electronic bit inside, so no points or condenser, and looking from the outside you would never know, blinking great and I think I paid £150,  it looks like their web site is being worked on so heres their phone number 01384 261500
  16. to discharge your battery connect a light bulb to it, or if its still in the car just turn your lights on (no engine running) and check the volts with your multi meter and  stop the discharge at 12.2v ,, that 50% discharged, it is now ready for a full charge, Then when your charger indicates its fully charged , leave it connected to the battery, and just unplug it for 30 secs then plug it back in this will give you a top up charge that cleans the plates inside the battery, This only extends the charge time by 2-3 hrs  so I'm led to believe.
  17. HI mine was a bit iffy when I first fitted it I unscrewed the cable from the tacho pulled the inner cable through a bit then re-screwed it back on, it all works fine now !!!!!!!!!!!! now Ive type this just unscrew from the dizzy push a couple for mm through and try again
  18. Hi welcome to the best and new (web site) forum (when our web guys get the bones sorted) it won't be to much longer, anyways back to your problem, pop the dizzy and leads in the oven for a few mins, because a damp cap or lead can be aright pain to trace, clean the plugs and stick them in to. at this stage it might be wise to pop a new condenser in, check and clean/regap the points, when i was doing mine I had H & H Ignition Solutions change mine to electronic, best move since sliced bread, and looking at it you would never know,   Just make sure the wife is out shopping
  19. Evening Daniel, do tell how did you get your avatar sort ? Did anybody notice the change of thread (arnt I naughty )
  20. Hi Guys, I have used this since the rebuild from Rimmer's  Automec Silicone Brake or Clutch Fluid - DOT 5 Ive not had any spongy brake issues, the mot guy commented that the brakes were very good for a completely new system, the car had only done 5 miles to the mot bay, so nothing was bedded in, and now there are as good any modern car, I did fit a servo when it all went back together 1973 Mk3 GT6, I would post pics but I haven't sussed that out yet, I have no "click to attach" button
  21. Hi I used a solid state one off of eBay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLTAGE-STABILISER-REGULATOR-10V-CLASSIC-CARS-MG-TRIUMPH-LAND-ROVER-BHA4602/253395040254?hash=item3aff8577fe:g:SykAAOSwxTlZyOrL   This is in my GT6 MK3 with no problems
