    Tyres

cliftyhanger wrote:1. Think carefully before fitting wires :-/ (unless for show purposes) Check out the various posts about the pros (looks) against the cons (a few) Yes. More cons: Wire wheels contribute to global warming and have caused some of the trouble in the middle east. More info here on why James Bond didn't really have them on his DB6 (he had revolution 5-spokes.) http://www.mwsint.com/site/cms/contentChapterView.asp?chapter=1
  2. Docman - shame to have lost you! I reckon - unless it's a bit "Princess and the Pea" (which it might be of course) - your impression's much more likely to be based on the change in tyres than wheels as you say. But what do I know. Re: Roundtails - naaaa, they all look the same.

  4. Danny that's brilliant - looks better than the original.
  5. You're talking about the wire baskets? Try eBay first of course, but there's nothing very clever aboiut the locking mechanism, as I recall. They could be taken off with an Allen key, if it weren't for that little nub in the middle there. If they're on tightly, I would advise you to centre punch that little sucker then drill that nub out of the way, then use an Allen key. Of course, they will then be less secure in the future - the baskets that is - but making a tool to fit would be a nuisance and I suspect your chances of finding a "key" out there are slim. If they're not done up tight, I would think a couple of flat blade screwdrivers might do.... Last idea - get an Allen key of the right size (measure the flats in the basket - accurately) then have your friendly lathe operator open the end for you....
  6. I ran 8" rims and 205's on mine for a while - looked good, made the ride as hard as rock. Had to get all my teeth done. Just sayin'.
  7. Think of it like the tube map. Central Line to Marble Arch, Northern line to your destination. See the number 72's in the middle? Those are the fuses. Edgeware road. The rev counter (tachometer - number 5) is intermittent 'cos you've got problems with the signals on the Hammersmith and City. Simples.
  8. Well, mine haven't. But then mine doesn't see many extremes of temperature, it's true.
  9. michael_charlton wrote:The MOT test is only for leaks now. The bounce test has now been abandoned If there is no leak then the car will pass an MOT Correct! My car passed an MOT test with the rear seized solid. Yes, I'd vote for new ones, since they're not a fortune. Ha! It's not my money! :)
  10. djw113uk wrote:Spin off conversion? - that is for straight six's only isn't it? I haven't seen one for the 4 cyls. But Moss, Canleys,  etc seem to list a non return 'tube' that is used with the oil cooler adaptor? Really? Blast! I thought there'd be a 4-cylinder version as well (yes, mine's now a 6-cyllinder). Apologies. There bloomin' well should be one. (I got very tired of listening to start-up rattle on the four-cylinder engines I was killing - anything that addresses that would be worth having.)
  11. Oil cooler - not necessarily - spin-off conversion for the oil filter - absolutely.
  12. Something shiny I don't have? Well well!
  13. PS - plastic??? (And sorry - my photo's naff all use to you of course, which is why I didn't post it earlier. I should have founf an old one...).
  14. He's a good bloke - came up with mine (with vents) for me, as I recall. Cardboard ones ain't worth having, IMO. Not sure about fitting them, myself. Ran without them for many years in 1300 and 1500 guise and put up with the road dirt flying everywhere. Now the cars got the GT6 engine (it's a Mk 3 engine I think - they all look the same) I have driven with them fitted and without. Logic says that in place they might speed airflow through out and under the car - and the car was designed to have them fitted - but.....   They're on at the moment. *Bling!*

    engine?

What are you on about chaps? It's not another one of those strange "Big Saloon" (a euphemism) social events is it? I've got a photo around here some place, I'll just have a rummage.

    Engine sound

8401 wrote:Thanks guys, Whats the best way to check for vacuum leaks? Phil For the inlet manifold, pour something in nice sensible SMALL quantites on it that you won't mind the engine ingesting, such as some light oil perhaps - and see if it disappears. For the exhaust manifold, get a feather on a stick or something. Or some talcum powder. Don't burn yourself or set fire to the thing, of course. It doesn't sound farty to me though, as if it's got inlet/exhaust problems. Nope. VR's just mentioned something I hadn't considered, the plug leads being out of order. I quite like that idea. Ditto lance, I suspect. Or it's the timing. Or you're running it on stale garbage petrol. It looks tidy though!

    Seats again

Ah! Sorry - the "Clubman(s)" version was the first on the list at the BB Classic web site I went to to check what you were talking about - and the cheapest version. I guess that is 'cos it's a simple bolt-in and you can't adjust it for-and-aft (or perhaps for rake either). I presumed you were looking at that one - seems I may have been wrong! I would be thinking about buying used cheap MX5 or something though, for the short term, while I saved my pennies up to get the originals fixed. Not 'cos I'm a period freak or anything you understand (my car looks like a Christmas tree covered in tinsel, after all) but just 'cos they're what fits best in my experience. Other opinions will definitely differ (this post may contain nuts.)
  18. Don't buy a Spitfire to do long cruises unless it has overdrive. In fact, don't buy a Spitfire to do long cruises anyway! Buy something with a bit more engine and a more relaxed feel for touring. Like - maybe - a GT6 or.....
  19. That's a great paint job - and it looks as if there's every chance the bonnet lettering will be straight, too.  :)

    Seats again

Your car looks really good. Haven't tried the BB seats myself but I've seen them in other people's cars and they look a bargain.... especially if you can stand to get the clubmans and fix them. It's a pity not to have all the adjustment you get with more expensive seats though - or with the originals. I went MX5 with mine, but soon went back to the originals 'cos I couldn't drive the thing. Lots of threads about them here, and other seats people have tried. Once again - nice looking car.
  21. All looks very neat and well done, as usual with your stuff, Beans. Every time I see one of your threads I think "Hmmm, I must get one of those wedges!" Then it wears off, obviously. Maybe one of these days.....
  22. I've got polybush red - too harsh. I'll be going blue sometime later in the year. If you've got wire wheels fitted, check they're not falling to bits.
