Hello fellow Acclaim owners, i am the proud owner of an A reg HLS Triomatic, only having done 42k from new, it is still on its original factory fitted tyres, which are now 28 years old! still with great tred, but recently flagging up a possible problem with bulging on one of the rear's.  :-/

Having looked into buying a set of new tyres, i found that an exact match would now be classed as 'vintage tyres'
(155/80 SR13) and the best price i have found for these was £71 EACH...... OUCH!

Does anyone have any advice, can i presume that modern budget 13'' tyres will be perfectly adequate? Would that spoil the look? Help needed!

Many Thanks

They don't look that dissimilar to tyres available 30-years ago.

You need to look for 155/80R13 rather than 155/80SR13.

Modern ones are all "T" rated by the looks of it, rather than "S" rated of the originals. The "T" is a better spec.

Firestone F590 is another possibilty.

Another option to you may be to get CD wheels is it? I seem to remember they took slightly different size tyres?

Or am I remembering wrong.

I am sure an Acclaim expert willl happen along shortly.

Cheers

Colin

Thank you very much Colin, I think my thoughts were more based on whether modern tyres would spoil the look? The originals i believe have a specific shape. A Google search using the original dimensions takes me straight to vintage Tyre specialists.

Modern tyres are round, and I'm sure they were 30 years ago.  :-/

Seriously though, all tyres look different. Some have the anti-curb strip, some bulge out more on the sidewall, etc. Budget tyres will be fine but have the potential to not be as grippy or last as long as the more expensive stuff. I say potentially as both the Herald and Acclaim run budget tyres (same brand and style but Heralds are wider and were only £25 when I got them) and have held their own against cars with better tyres at autotests.

Make sure you buy all weather tyres. The only puncture I've had came two years ago at Stoneleigh (well, the hotel) and the replacement is a summer only tyre. I didn't know this until a month ago when I looked at replacing all of them on the car after getting an advisory on one at the MOT - all tyres were 3.5mm when I measured them when I got home...

You can always go down the part-worn route, but it's not something I'm comfortable with.

I've just fitted budgets on the front, the back ones are 8 years old but he recons are ok at the mo... If I was using it as a daily then I'd probably fit something better but its a fair weather car so should be fine... Do a search and you'll get reviews of tyres, some of the budgets are pretty good... Mine are Tigars, but they don't do an 80 profile version...  The CD has 165/70s on them btw...

Thank you everyone.... you have been a great help, and it's good to know what you guys are using on your acclaims......I just thought seen as this will be the first time my acclaim has had it's tyres renewed, i'd do a bit of research into what would be right, and what would be wrong. So cheers.

Welcome to the forum. You should've replaced those tyres AGES ago. I wouldn't worry about modern tyres. Safety is more important. Try getting a few quotes from your local tyre places (even the "fast fit" ones). I'm sure you can get branded ones for less than the £71 you were quoted.  Colin , you're right about the CDs. They had 165/70R13. You can go to 175 tyres. I had these on Becky II but now she's back on 155s.

virtually the same price, maybe a tenner or so a set difference.

I have little faith in budget tyres, choose something that will work when you need it to :)

then find somebody with their own tyre machine, and save the fitting costs, which are considerable these days (often £60 a set!!)

haha - YES, I should have replaced the tyres ages ago, and god forbid i get a puncture one day, because I will do everything to avoid using the original and still brand new spare tyre that sits in the boot!
I will have a good look around today at deals locally, compare budget to brand.... there is someone on Ebay at the moment selling part worn WHITE WALLS! Now, i must admit i have a very big soft spot for white walls, and with my acclaim being a beautiful vibrant red, part of me thought they would look good, but i'm sure some of you out there will possibly think i'm mad!
But, white walls aside, its a set of 4 part worn tyres with good tred for £150.... £20 delivery.... something else to consider i guess? Its mixed opinions with part worn, some people say its a good way to save money, but still have a half decent set of tyres, other people say its a waste of money and you might as well pay extra for brand new.... but when money is an object, sometimes you HAVE to look at alternatives.

Tyres are important, and performance counts rather more than looks.

You can buy a set of decent brand new tyres fitted for about £150, or self fit for about £100. Talking Uniroyal etc at this pricepoint.

If buying secondhand, besides tread is the age. tyres become rather less than good after about 7 years or so, I would guess whitewalls could be old tyres, and therefore a waste of money.

My issue with part-worn's is that you never know the tyres history. Has it come off a wheel which has had a nasty bang into a curb? Why is such a new tyre no longer needed? I've had a tyre delaminate on me - granted it was old - and seen loads of brand new tyres with defects so I'd rather buy new myself and have more confidence. There are also well known brands I won't use because I either don't trust them or don't think they're very good in general. The budget tyres I've bought on the other hand have been brilliant.

Yes, the whitewalls i mentioned from Ebay are not vintage, they are ordinary part worn black tyres, that go through a special process to have the white stripe put on them (i'm told it's not paint)

So of course, yes, there is the risk that you don't know the history of that tyre, which could either be a car that has crashed and been written off, or (just as likely) could be a car that has simply come to the end of its life (mot failures, engine failures, etc)

The risk is, you just don't know.....

I think after speaking to everyone, i definitely favor new budget tyres... sounds like you can't go wrong.

but DAMMIT......I want whitewalls too! ARRRGGGG :-)

sorry to be so late on this one, my peronal prefrance is for 155s as i find they give a lighter steering & handle just as well. Saying that ginger has 175 michelin energys on for the last 5? years, ive had to replace the fronts this year but the rears are still good.
