Chambers Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 My gasket is looking like its once again on its way out. Gonna take the mani and downpipes off give them a good tidy then fit a new gasket but Ive just seen this on Evil-bayhttp://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TRIUMPH-SPITFIRE-EXHAUST-DOWNPIPE-MOD-NEW-1500-L-K-/380311520219?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item588c5543dbDoes anyone have any details or experience of them from Triumph or otherwise?
Clive Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 Looks a bit like a bracket to fix the downpipe to the gearbox or similar. Not sure how much it would help though. After suffereing a couple of blown gaskets, I did what you plan. Dropped he downpipe and took th eexhaust manifold off. Filed the mating surfaces flat, and then removed th elittle studs, drilled out and retapped to 10mm (what I had rather than metric)I have used a couple of 10mm studs with nuts, and one is a cap-head bolt. Should be fine form many more years I hope.
ferny Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 Never had an issue with sealing a 1500 downpipe.I do the same as you and file both surfaces flat. I then use a copper gasket and firegum. I also tried two copper gaskets and firegum on each surface and it worked a treat.
Chambers Posted January 27, 2011 Author Posted January 27, 2011 Thanks, I dont have studs just bolts so obviously that has been changed at some time. Ill get some firegum and put that on either side of the new gasket
