Herald 1200 Su conversion

Hi Guys,

I was just wondering, is it possible to replace the Solex carburettor on a 1200 Herald, with a Single HS2 or HS4 SU carburettor. Is there inlet manifold which would fit?

Spitfire mk1 and mk2 manifolds will bolt straight on. I can't remember what hs they used though.

Cheers ferny, Weren't they twin carb'd?

I was thinking more along the lines of a single SU carb conversion, like used on BMC cars back in the day.

Use the speedograph adaptor, which will allow a single Stromberg or SU on the original manifold. They appear on ebay quite a lot. The left one is for SU, the right one is for Stromberg. For the SU, a carb from a Morris Minor has the float chamber at the correct angle.

Thanks Paudman, I've contacted him and just waiting for a response now.

I'm going to look for a adaptor where i can use a morris minor's Single HS2.

I've had a reply back from the guy on eBay with the manifold adapter, and he recommended me fitting a Stromberg CD125, using his adapter.

He also claimed that the Stromberg would improve performance and give me an extra 5 miles per gallon!!!!  :)

I'd be more inclined to go for a CD150 for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, CD125s and HS2s were both offered in pairs for the 1147 engine, while John Kipping reckoned the CD150 set up for a 13/60 would be just about right for an 1147. It's not a theory I've put to the test for myself, but it's my intended starting point when I get around to doing the same conversion myself.
Secondly, the CD125s are a lot less common than the CD150, I can think of only a handful of cars which used them. CD150 spares are always available from Triumph specialists.
As an aside, I can't think of an application which uses a single CD125, always twins on those I know.

          Do you know which needles he recommended for use with the 1147 engine Bill?

It would be interesting to read what he had to say about this combination if you could provide a reference also,

John reckoned to just use it as taken off the 13/60, so whatever needle is used in that application.

got a pair of CD125's on an alexander manifold for a 1200 herald stashed somewhere I think   :)
