Spitfire Bonnet Lettering

Hi All,

I have just gone to fit the triumph badges to the bonnet of my mk3 spit.

I inserted the plastic clips into the holes and then went to press the badge into the clips.

To my horror the clips just pushed through the holes ??)

It seems the holes in the bonnet are to big for the little black plastic clips.

Has anyone come across this before?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Jamie

You may find the pegs on the back of the letters are to big a diameter
So the peg is not going to the plastic holder but pushing the whole lot through
I filed/ground the pegs to suit the plastic first, so I knew they would go in ,then inserted the plastics into the bonnet
They are rough cast pegs and not perfectly round

Had another look tonight the holes are definately to big , pushed the clips onto the badge first and its still a slightly loose fit when offered up.

Have a feeling the painter drilled out the holes oversize after filling and painting ....

Would using starlock washers work?.....

Yes as an option they would work

Reminds me of the guy who took his Spitfire 1500 for total prep and spray.
Picked up the car and then saw the headlight cowls had no seams
The painter in `his wisdom` said.....I`v filled all the gaps around the headlight cowls before painting.............
Dread to think what was to happen when trying  to change his headlight bulbs

When the metal badge fixings are used, the locating holes are fractionally larger than the badge pins, so the badges are properly centralised.
The badge holes were enlarged when plastic bushes were introduced.

As your fixing holes are now over-size for either type of fixing, I wouldn't recommend relying on the metal fixings alone. The increased clearance will allow some lateral movement of the badge, the badge fixings are likely to loosen through vibration through the car in use. This is typically what happens when metal fixings are used in a location where the larger holes are intended for plastic fixings.
I would recommend using an adhesive or sealant to fill the gap between the pin and the edge of it's locating hole, then apply the clip from behind to pull it all into place.

Cheers,
Bill.
