mazfg
My layshaft is knackered on the gearbox and I'm wanting to get it reconditioned. Have thought about doing it myself but don't have the tools and confidence to do it. Wondered if anyone had a ball park figure for how much it would cost. It also has overdrive..which works very well but probably worth being looked at too. My other thought was to buy a recond unit..saw Quliiers do one at £290 (+ £150 exchange) or Rimmers but they're £525 (+ £400 exchange ) Just wondering on comparison to getting my old box reconditioned or just buying a recond unit? and also if anyone knows of anywhere else??Thanks,
Clive
Do your research with that London "specialist". You have been warned. Is it the layshaft or the pin that is worn? If the layshaft and gears, I expect you will have to pay more than the std exchange, as the major components need to be serviceable.Mike papworth has an enviable reputation with gearboxes. Not the cheapest, but who wants a box built with cheap components?
thescrapman
I understood that a Lonodn based specialist was closing up soon havng sold teh land for housing. Anyway, I would go to Mike Papworth. He seems to be the only person willing to provide a good warranty. But you do pay a bit more.Other option is Dave at Canley Classics or perhaps TD Fitchetts.Cheers
CP72
I fitted a TD Fitchetts sourced gearbox (3rail OD) to a friend's Spitfire some months ago. The gearbox works a treat, no problems at all. So my experience with them is good.

Bitumen Boy
I fitted a gearbox from Fitchetts, must be about 10 years ago and no problems with the 'box itself.
