The Daily Express newspaper stages the first London to Sydney Marathon. One of the toughest rallyies of the period, it covered 10,000 miles through Europe, Asia and Australia, crossing 12 countries in over 250 hours of non-stop driving time, a unique test of both men and machines. 98 cars set out from the Crystal Palace, London on 24 November, but eight days later in Bombay having covered 6,800 miles, there were only 72 left. A Hillman Hunter driven by Andrew Cowan was declared the winner and awarded the prize after a UK works Citroën DS21 collided with a Mini driven by local youngsters less than 100 miles from the finish. The Citroën was wrecked and so were the high expectations of the team. "
