single rail gearbox questions

Recommended Posts

Hi all, just a few quick questions about single rail gearbox:

Where does the 1" extra length come from as compared to a 3 rail? I believe this is the same with OD or without.
Is the gearlever in the same place on both boxes?
What is the carbuncle/cylinder thing half way up the gearlever on the pics Ive seen of single rails?

Thanks

The 1" extra is in the tailshaft (non-OD) or the OD/adapter plate (OD).  Both are 1" longer than their 3 rail equivalent.

Gear lever is in the same place.

The "carbuncle" is a rubber heat/vibration isolator.  I used to chop them out and weld the two halves back together.  The gearlever did get hot though.
