  1. Dead Diff. well the car ran perfectly, no problems with fuel even in the heat! Gearbox did not get any noisier just a shame the diff went.. Don't know what happened but it seized up I guess lost some teeth inside.... Wont know what happened until I get it back that's scheduled for the 25 Sept.... Oh it was just 2 years old, 3.63, and done one 10CR and an Autosolo, maybe 2.5L and GT6 diff don't like each other. BUT still had a great time and def will do the next one :)) Cheers mike

  4. Quoted from Chris Hunter Thanks for your replies I quite fancy Triumph Autoclassique if its recommended. Car is a runner Clive - thanks for invite. Too much going on this time to meet up. When do you normally meet? Ever Month? I have had it for 4+ years but it has not been garaged the past 2 so its been getting a bit of a battering. It goes in for a MOT on Monday Mark

  6. 1078 wrote:Hi, my son has just got a new MoT on his Mk 3 GT6, but it was luck really that his ridiculously dim tail lights passed. The tail lights and brake lights are so dim you can just see that a filament is alight.  He's fiddled with rewiring the earths and is about t have a go at the reflectors in a spare set of light units, but is there another fault happening here that people have suffered? Are LED cluster bulbs available for GT6 light units? Cheers, sixlover I had dim rear lights. Nothing wrong with the electrics but very dirty never cleaned  rear lights and very old bulbs. Take the light units out, pull them apart clean in the kitchen sink, dry and reassemble. If you can get some new rubber seals to stop water getting into the boot. Go to a good auto shop and buy some decent quality new bulbs and refit! regards mike
  7. GT6 back together with original gearbox. Drove about 40 miles today, feels really good, no vibration from the rear (I guess that's the new drive shafts/bearings) and remembered why driving a  GT6 is such fun :))) So all ready for the 10CR...... :) Mike
  8. ok GT6 back on the road with original gearbox and a nice new MOT! Passed with no problems. Need to sort out the brakes ** and refit the gearbox tunnel and pasenger seat. Might end up going to Enfield in Libbys Focus... :( ** brakes: brake stop but have new shoes in the rear and pedal has a lot movement, should improve as the shoes bed in, but they do make a very strange squelling noise once they are warm?? Mike
  9. Oh dear this is not going well... :( Started preping the GT6 at the beginning of  June. Gearbox was getting nosiy in 2nd and third gear ( this gearbox had been rebuilt only 2 years ago...) Gearbox out and fit nearly rebuilt gearbox (from a different supplier) and change UJ on drive shafts Realise rear bearing need replacing (lots of play in them), order new drive shaft from one of the better suppliers.. New drive shafts arrive, build them up with brakes bit (new shoes etc). Ready to fit and realise one of the new drive shaft flanges is running at least 5mm out of true,... Talk to supplier and get it changed. As usual no apology... but this is triumph world where there is no customer service.... Finally get drive shaft fitted, gearbox in and take for a drive. Horrid noise from gearbox, Supplier says oh yes problem with idler gear. Take new gearbox out. Take to supplier he strips it down while I am there and is not sure of the problem. Leave it with to fix. He has it for 2 days and 'fixes it', pick it up. Go on holiday for a week and have a lovely time. Come back on Sat and today fit 'fixed gearbox' ... still very noisy sounds like a bag of nails. Then petrol pipe (< 1 year old) starts to leak. Feel like giving the cars up completely... So next weekend gearbox has to come out again and I will fit old slightly noisy gearbox and try to get a refund on the ' rebult upgraded box. At least the Herald is behaving and am thinking we might take that on the 10CR. If we do there is no point having the GT6 and I might as well sell it or break it for parts on Ebay. Overall I am completely fed up with crap parts and service from all the Triumph suppliers. I am lucky enough to be in a position to be able to spend lots of money on my cars but it is just wasted with poor quality parts and very poor customer service. Maybe it better with the large chassis cars (TR's etc..) but the small chassis 'cheap' cars service and parts are rubbish. feeling very very grumpy Mike
  10. Anyone run a 1500 herald (ie spitfire engine) with O/D with a 3.63 diff instead of the normal 4.11 diff. Just wondering what its like on motorways and whether it noticeable  kills the accerelation? Mine is on a 4.11 and I have a 3.63 to fit but would be interested in other experince before I fit it. This wont happen until the GT6 is back with a working gearbox (long  saga....) or will be a rush job ready for the 10CR. mike
  11. Slimboyfat wrote: Sounds like a fault common to recently reconditioned gearboxes, a bent reverse idler arm. This allows the idler to contact 1st and give the noices you descibe. Take the top off and take a look (engage 1st). If you are careful you can get a long drift in and give the idler arm a quick twonk (only needs to move a fraction). Should have been picked up though by any regular Triumph gearbox builder. Thanks for the info, interesting will have a look at it tomorrow. Its out now, took me about an hour and half to get it out. Without a pit I think removing the gearbox is better excerise than cycling to work! At least all the other stuff is done (drive shafts, brakes, service etc...). Mike

Took the car for a quick drive before fitting the gearbox cover. OD is fine, 3rd and 4th nice and quiet but 1st is very very noisy.... and there is a continuous ticking noise  from the box which I don't like :( Feeling hot and grumpy and beginning to think that I should not have sold the Acclaim. At least the Herald is behaving well and is enjoying the sunny weather. Mike PS driving a GT6 with no gearbox cover is interesting, the amount of heat coming from the engine and exhaust is amazing! Gearbox coming out tonight to be returned to supplier and 'faulty part' to be replaced and I just love taking the gearbox out of the GT6.... Just realised that the MOT runs out in early August, this was not how I planned the preperation at the start of the year! Mike
  13. Nick Seeing your engine in bits makes me feel a bit better about the GT6, at least I can drive the car! Mike

  15. Reading this about the TomTom files made me look at the count down timer... Only 90 days left what happened to the rest of the year! GT6 in bits, gearbox in garage, Acclaim sold but there is always the Herald so no need to panic tooo much yet. :) Mike

Something like this https://www.europaspares.com/product/67/13198/GAUGES/INSTRUMENT_SENDERS___SENSORS/Oil_Pressure_Gauge_Pipelines.html However, the temperature part is a problem because that is a filled system mechanical temperature gauge and what you should have is a copper bulb and running nut on the end of the armoured capillary line.  I can't see that in the pic which probably means that some ignorant heathen has chopped it off, let the fill fluid out and spoiled it.  It is possible to get these mended but not cheap....... Nick I used to have a copy of Car Mechanics from  the early sixties that had details of how to refill and repair the capillary line. I think it was part of the reading material in our downstairs toliet! Will have a look for it next time I am in there :) Mike
  17. thanks guys interesting discussion of the engines and how to get divorced! BTW Nice  pictures of engines and other bits...., I like the one with Moss, shows lots of control/focus.... mike

Its interesting how many German companies have Engineers on there boards and that the banks in Germany take a long term view of investment. In the uk there are very few (any) boards of large companies that have engineers or technical specilaist on the board. The uk is dominated by Finance/accountants/lawyers on the boards and the UK markets have a very short term view of investments. Sorry all of that was very OT and maybe not true of the 1960's.. Back on topic..... So are there any of Twin Cam engines around being used? Mike

  20. Just watched the Youtube video of the 1961 LeMans with the 3 TR4 with the twin cam engines (Sabrina??). They finished the race and infact were the only team to finish with all the cars still running. So why didnt Triumph develop the engines to use in the road cars? Was there something wrong with the design or was it the usual lack of development funds? Do any of the engine still exsist? BTW I liked the fins that were added to the Tr4's made them look very 1960's rather than 1950's..... Mike

All the best bits of the 10CR will be in the dark when most John D`s will be sat watching Maigret chomping on a piece of Brie     Dont be sure, during the last 10CR I was breathalysed at 2am in a small village in the middle of France.... I was ok but was told to turn off the front spot lights. They had 4 policemen and 2 cars ready to catch us! Mike
  22. I have used the main car temp sensor. I have added a stabilized 10V supply and then measure the voltage across gauge and then use a small PIC based cct to control the Fan (and switch 3 LEDS, green, orange and Red to show what it is doing). I have programmed it to have some hystersis when the temp pases  the threshold (high temp) and then it stays on unitil it drops to a lower limit.. The LED comes on at 50C (green), orange and then red. Bit of a fun really but does show you that the controller is working. I also have an over ride switch. I am not sure it is as stable as it should be. The main temp sensor is a PRT and its fed from a stabulized supply. Will probably improve it over the summer ready for the 10CR. Mike
