  1. Just finished putting the Park Lane foams in my seats. One of the best things I've done to the car, very pleased with them. I kept the original covers, Vinyl and cloth chestnut, put them through the washing machine in a kill or cure operation, came out very well! Only slight criticism is that PL sent white tie wraps but I had some black already so not a problem and you can't see them anyway.
  2. You haven't mentioned if you've lowered the suspension but it's certainly low. Too low? Particularly on the front, maybe an optical illusion but it looks nose down, the bottom of the car doesn't seem parallel to the road.
  3. Certainly looks like a horn mounting bracket. How many horns do you have? One? Perhaps you once had two? I have two and once, also, a klaxon but some scrote had it away, leaving a bracket just like that!

  5. Ah.... Mine are much later, temperature compensators and all that malarkey. So I'm not the expert on your one. However things that caught me out were: The carb to manifold gasket, these can be put on four ways, back to front, upside down, back to front AND upside down and finally, the right way. There is a cut out on the gasket to line up with a hole in the carb body. I put mine on wrong and got exactly the symptoms you describe. There again yours may not have the hole!  ;D The inlet manifold gasket may be leaking which will also mess up the mixture. I think even with a worn jet and needle you should be able to screw it down to run lean. How about the choke? Did that get overhauled? If  that's not right you're gonna have trouble with the mixture.
  6. After several years and finally a full carb rebuild, my choke was still stiff. Finally a squirt of oil down the cable sheath sorted it! Deep embarrassment.  :B
  7. I, unknowingly, had a fibre washer fall into my tank. When I put my foot down there was a greater flow of fuel out the tank and the washer got sucked over the outlet, fuel starvation, engine died. Left it for a bit, the washer floated off, engine started. This happened a dozen times until I finally found the washer and hooked it out with a wire coat hanger. I have also suffered with crud in the fuel line which I sorted by dyno rodding the pipes with plastic strimmer cord.

  10. I had badly worn thrust bearings, the crank was moving back and forth 1/4 inch as I recall. The crank was saved with a regrind but what wasn't straight away apparent was the unusual wear in the bores. An elongated S shape caused by the crank moving backwards and forward on acceleration and deceleration. Despite this the compression wasn't too bad. Not sure what would've happened if I'd put it back together like that! Worth getting it checked out. Mine needed a re-bore.
  11. I'm sort of worried by that, I know everybody is concerned by low pressure but mine is as high as 90 when cold and 70 to 50 when hot. :-/  Dodgy gauge, probably?  :-/
  12. But I now know that Spitfire MK3s have Jaegar dials, which I didn't know before. So, the knowledge of age passed down the years! Who am I kidding?  ;D

I finally discovered I had an 1/8th of an inch end float!  :-/   I replaced the thrust washers and crank shells however, the damage was done. The bores had worn in an elongated S shape and the crank bearings were worn lower at the edges with the back and forward movement. Only fixed by a re-bore and regrind.

  15. No I take that back, not right.  :B  There should be no brake material at the top of the shoe on the piston side and I thought there was but having blown the pic up my eyes have deceived me. So the one on the right is upside down except, the slot on this one does look wider, try it on the other side if it is wider.

  17. Agree that the lower spring should be behind the shoes. However, the shoes are on the wrong sides. The right hand one is NOT upside down but it should be on the piston side. There is a wider slot on this shoe to accommodate the handbrake lever. This is why the piston is not fully returned and you can't get the drum on.
  18. I used to open my GT6 with my Cortina key! A Crook Lock is a good investment. I also got fed up with a different key for every lock so, I took the barrels out and rearranged the tumblers so that one key opened them all.

  20. A deadline is a great way to get things done. Mine's a similar story, a re-spray and then garaged for 20 years until, my daughter wanted it for her wedding.  ??) Took me 7 months solid but I made it with a month to spare and, as a bonus, it got me out of the wedding planning. Oh, and I bought my car in 1978.  8)
