  1. Not sure, I have found a few web pages that show the conversion but they do not go into detail regarding what machining needs doing. Ill pm Nick when I get a min. Thanks Rob
  2. I now have a pair of shafts! this has took me nearly 8 months to get a decent pair. What next? Do I need a machine shop and I know the GT6 rear hubs may also need machining to take the MGF larger bearing? Rob

    Vr1 oil

with my 1300 engine I tried VR1 for two oil changes and found no difference to the Halfords Classic stuff. I still changed my oil every 2500 miles and wow it needed changing and made a difference. Glad I don't have to mess with expensive oil now, I can buy fully synthetic oil for my zetec for 15 quid and it needs changing every 2 years. Mine has now done 3500 miles and the oil is still clear. Rob
  4. I never replaced mine, 7 years they have never been on, look good enough for me
  5. Driving home on Sunday, we came across about 10 miles of Specs cameras on the next stretch of the A1 to be upgraded from Leeming Bar to Scotch Corner. Limit is set at 50mph. Jim.
  6. 7458 wrote:Shiney new rocker gear came..... I torqued it down as per the manual and then set up the valve clearances three times just to make sure. Once I thought all was okay I took off the coil lead and turned the engine over on the starter just to make sure it was working as it should. I re installed the cover and the coil lead and started it up. Wow!!!!!!!!! what a difference! It sounded like a completely different car and what I had thought was a chattery noise from the gearbox must have been the old rockers as I didn't hear it any more. How many miles should I do before I recheck the clearances? a few hundred or a couple of thousand? cheers! Well done, your car will be the better for new equipment. I would check clearances at 500 miles and again at 1000 miles. However, if you are doing short runs with cold-hot-cold cycles of the engine, then check at 250 miles. If the parts are good quality and well fitted, you should not expect any adjustment  ;)
  7. Latest update: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-27586274 Jim.
  8. Looks like the Stelvio will open today. "CLOSED in WINTER: anticipated opening on the Tuesday, 27.05.2014 17:00, from the junction three fountains to the Stelvio pass." from the Alpenportal website. Weather doesn't look like anyone will have their top down today though. The snow gate looks open but the road seems to still be partially blocked by snow.   However, on the bright side, the burger stalls are already open for business. Jim.
  9. 7458 wrote:The shaft is dead too. What I thought was just a weak spring holding the front rocker in place it also turns out that the shaft underneath has worn oval. Am I better of getting a recon complete assembly with reconditioned rockers and pedestals like this http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-214559RASSY or do I use my old pedestals and go for new rockers, like this http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-RR1312 As Rimmers have a 15% off this week there isn't a massive amount of price difference Forget about price. Go for quality and do the job properly. New, not recon.
  10. Buy a new set of rocker arms and a new rocker shaft. Anything less than new replacements is false economy in my opinion. Your engine and your ears will love you for it. I did exactly this recently, when my mechanic discovered wear on the rocker shaft. In my case, the grub screw on the end of the shaft was missing, meaning that oiling to the front rocker arms was ineffective, thus causing wear. (I understand the grub screws are there so the shaft oilway can be cleaned if it becomes dirty). I sourced the rocker arms and shaft from Canleys. They provided great service.
  11. Yep I think I do have the right one, just one more to find  :) Cheers Nick, Ill let you know when I have the other
  12. sorry to re-open this thread, I am in the process of getting parts together for Nick's conversion. What is the size of the shaft  or do I need to split it to check its the right one? Rob
  13. wow, are you intent to keep the single carb? you mentioned performance! Rob
  14. Yeah, speed up to overtake the lorries, usually in a 40mph Tesco convoy doing closer to 56mph, then slow down to compensate and bunch everyone up behind you. It's a wonderful farce to make politicians look like their doing something positive while everyone else is placed in greater danger. Still, brings in more money to the government coffers, so that can't be a bad thing? Jim.
  15. One other point. Part of the reason for posting when the Stelvio is opened and closed was to provide some sort of record for future organisers when they could get over the pass. In one 10CR year, the pass was closed the following weekend in September after the 10CR had gone over it. Strangely, I've noticed when the Stelvio is closed early, we have a colder, snowier winter and when it closes late, like last year, we have a milder winter. Jim.
  16. Andy, Been a bit busy elsewhere and had not noticed your posting. Have a look at this for the state of passes.  It is in German but if you can't understand the traffic light stuff, Google Translate has always helped me read the additional notes. http://www.alpen-journal.de/alpenservice/alpenpaesse.html You may also like this (pretty picture): http://www.suedtirol3d.it/#/stilfser-joch-passo-dello-stelvio-stilfs-stelvio/ And this is of some limited use: http://www.fuel-prices-europe.info/ But the best Alpine site is undoubtedly this: http://www.alpineroads.com/alpmap.php Okay, it's for motorbikes but the information is pure gold. But you didn't read it here. Jim.
  17. The "good" thing is that the cameras will only be on single carriageway sections not the dual carriageways, so, a little sense has prevailed. A lot of the problems are caused by HGV's trying to overtake on the dual carriageway sections, or elephant racing as we call it, then they complete their overtake just as you get back to single carriageway. Oh, and by the way, the speed limit for HGV's on the A9 is 40mph! Specs cameras on the only locations where you may end up trying to overtake a convoy of HGV's is a recipe for disaster. The genius who thought this up, probably someone who cycles to work in Edinburgh to save the environment, should be made to stand on the white line on a single carriageway section of the A9 to experience the same excitement as the drivers who wonder if they'll safely pass the HGV or have 3 points on their licence by the time they reach Inverness. Jim.
  18. Starting to clear the Stelvio now, about 2 weeks later than last year. Jim.
  19. Here's a little snippet of information. http://www.thecourier.co.uk/news/local/perth-kinross/a9-average-speed-camera-work-to-begin-1.290726 Great news.  I feel safer already. There's a huge amount of local opposition to this but it's going ahead anyway. Jim.
  20. What Mike says, My diff replaced 9 years ago leaked from day one, no problems I manage to change the oil every couple of years. It still leaks. As Tigger (Steve) says, its not leaking its sweating power lol Rob
  21. Buy a haynes manual. Brakes and Clutches are easy enough to repair and maintain, you need to check that when you push on the clutch pedal it is operating the slave cylinder, you can tell this with the help of another person looking at the slave from underneath whilst the car (car on stands and not just jack) if this is not working get back and let us know. Rob
  22. I found my Squirt build a relative straightforward one, built from a kit and following the build instructions. The fitting was straight forwards and other than a few niggles which I am sure you will get with every build the Megasquirt was the right route for me. Rob
