A bit early yet, but advice / opinions on tyre type and size (aspect ratio etc) to fit to the Stag rims on my estate is what I am after.

No suggestions about 15inch wheels either please, I am seeking to keep this car original.

Stags were originally 185/14 as I'm sure you know Mike, the S estate was 175/14. For the closest rolling circumference and availability I have 195/70/14 on the estate.
My PI also on s rims has 175/14 but these are very slightly raising the gearing compared to the original 185 tyres on 13'' rims.
Any idea what size the car was shod with originally, because if you have the money, Longstone Tyres just down the road from me, can supply the tyres!

Does the car have S-Type alloys or steels??

I know you said no 15 inchers, but what about a set of TR5 steels and rostyles. Not cheap, but give the same look. Good choice of tyres as well.

I suspect originals would have been 185/14 Michelin X or ZX (?) or Goodyear Grand Prix S.

I'm sure our "Michelin Man" can advise what was state of the art in 1972/3 from the french.

Cheers

It has Stag alloys. I am trying to keep it as it left the factory (although factory and GKN modified it)

As to the 5 rims, do you know how much NOS 5 Rostyles sell for? - the last set on ebay was over £600. - and there are not many 5 rims that are still "true" today and capable of being balanced.

The original Michellins are still on the rims - i'll check the size when I get home

175 x 14 was the original tyre size on the 2500S when fitted with the same alloy rims as the Stag.
There are a fair few 175 x 14s available, just need to look out for and avoid the van tyres, you want H or T rated.
I've just bought four 175 x 14 Goodyear GT2s. They're fine, very sticky. Firestone do a good value one, the F580.
Original was of course Michelin XAS, which was asymmetric. AFAIK the only asymmetric 175 x 14s available today are from Continental and Michelin. Both quite pricy.
The closes looks-wise seems to be the Vredestein Sprint Classic. The tread pattern is not too dissimilar.
Where aspect ratios are not quoted (as was common in the 70s), it should be assumed to be approximately 80%, but different manufacturers had different rolling radii for the same size tyre.
Edit: further info, after '76 Stag and S Saloon had same size tyres (175 x 14). Assume this was just cost-cutting rationalisation by BL.

That was my idea for the PI, there was a set of 5 rims on ebay that had no bids on an £80 start, I was tempted but thought the Rostyle trims might be rare/expensive. Didn't realise they would be as much as that, and I haven't ever seen any 2nd hand ones.

Back to the drawing board.

I know of one 5 owner who fitted Rover Rostyles (from a P5 - these are 15") he had the hubs machined to fit 5 studs.

I personally like 185/70/14 on Stag alloys..not so keen on 195s they always look too wide for the rim width and suspect they might squirm more on the road...However my number one choice for your car would be 185/14 michelin XAS that are still available from specialists , I know there would have been various options when the car was new  , but surely for "looks and originality" these are the obvious choice......Just my opinion !!!

Thank you all for your input.

I do concur with Dave though, as it keeps the authentic 70s look and driving experience too, and short of changing the rims (which I won't do) there doesn't seem to be any other tyres that give a significant advantage over the original michelin.
