Front lights

When I put front lights on I get front side lights to are they meant to do that on a mk3 gt6

how do you mean "front lights"? Can you turn the back lights on separately?

I expect every car has a 2 position switch where you can turn on the side lights (front and back) and the second position where you can turn on the head lights. Somewhere in the car either near your left foot or on a stalk near the steering wheel there will be a second switch to turn the head lights between dip and main.

That's what I was asking when I switch three position light switch I get lights off side lights and then last one has headlights and side lights together should it be like that just going through a restore been off road a long time

position 1 all lights off
position 2 side lights only
position 3 side light and head lights

There's a quirky variant on Heralds and earlier Spitfires/GT6s where the master light switch controls:
  - 0ff
  - Exterior lights
  - Extrerior + dashboard
and the column switch is three position too:
  - side only
  - side and main beam
  - side and dipped beam

But yes, in all cases, side lights remain on with headlights
