jjferreira
Evening Everyone. Unfortunately still awaiting on a few books form Ebay. So here is another silly question. willcolumbine
Well thats easy! The brand dosen't matter so much as long as it's good old 20/50...
rotoflex
You do want to find one with historically similar levels of ZDDP.Over here that's Castrol GTX and Shell Rotella.
Paudman
Castrol GTX, it's on special offer over here at £7.99 for four litres so off to Makro I go...I use nothing else in my Triumphs, and they reward me by dripping the stuff all over the road... hypoid53
Colin, That Makro price for GTX is pretty good:is that Trade only being a cash & carry or can we normal folk buy it for that?Is anyone else aware of good oil offers at the moment? There seems to be little on offer in the West country at the moment...!

jjferreira
Brilliant, I was also told there is something you can mix with the oil, to kind of improve any oil linkages is that correct? My car drips a little bit of oil, and i was told thatcheers
Paudman
There are remedies that you can add to the oil, like Stop-Leak, they supposedly make the oil seals swell and supposedly stop leaks, but these can be at best a temporary repair and I'd prefer to replace the seals or gaskets. There are also additives like Slick 50 to supposedly protect the engine via the oil, but a good oil should stand alone.
lordleonusa
Don't know if it is available in the UK, but there is a Castrol GTX 'High Mileage' version in the USA which already contains the seal swelling additives, it's in a crimson plastic bottle.L
TR7th Heaven
Yes, we have the Castrol GTX high mileage here in the UK. I've used it and can honestly say that it reduced smoke on start up. So perhaps the theory that seals can be rejuvenated is true. I wasn't using much oil, but was getting embarrassed by blue smoke when leaving for work in the morning.Rich ;)
herald948
Hi, Léon! Is there more than one version of GTX High Mileage here in the US? I've been using that oil, but it comes in a green plastic bottle. Is the crimson bottle the special "classic" variety with the supposedly higher levels of ZDDP? jjferreira
Passed by BP and I grabbed a bottle of Castrol GTX but is 10/40 is that ok or should I just go and replace it.tks
tiggrr1
It will do for topupsbut you really are better off with 20/50 it will give you better oil pressure when hot.I myself am going to try DaveKents suggestion of Millers 10/60It should give the best of both worlds as it's thinner to aid startup on cold mornings (the 10 in the designation)and thicker at temperature to give a better oil pressure with a hot hard running engine ( the 60 in the designation)I know that is an over simplification before all you clever buggers out there get on my case as there are all sorts of additives and specs to consider too ;)
rotoflex
I used 10w/40 for decades, then heard everyone say to use 20w/50, so I decided to go with the crowd. It will probably be fine.
tiggrr1
You are right rotoflex it will work for years but they were designed for 20w/50 ;)According to my oil pressure gauge when hot I get around 35psi with 10w/40 and around 45psi with 20w/50.My tierd old engine needs all the help it can get ;)
