Gearbox problems..

It's not really obvious how hard it is coming out of third in the video.  Do you mean that it takes a hard tug to get it to come out of third itself or that going back down into second is hard?  Neither of these indicates a problem with 3rd gear synchro to me but the last one could mean a problem with second gear synchro.  Or maybe just that the new oil you put in when you changed the overdrive is less syncho-friendly than before.

What I do notice is that the gear lever moves alot as you go on and off the power - more than normal IMO.  This might indicate a problem with the circlip on the front end of the mainshaft (pretty much under 3rd/4th synchro hub) and could be the cause of the change issue also.

Well  this morning i drove by only using 1, 2 and 4th gear , those work great.
But..

The moving gearstick is only in 3rd.

When i get into 3rd (goes is fine !) then want to downshift.. it's hard to come out of 3rd and very sometimes grinds in 2nd.
When i go from 3rd to 4th,  it's also hard to come out of 3rd and goes fine into 4th.

My friend thought it could be the spring of the syncro of 3d gear , and the next step will be that she pops out of gear.

When i changed the OD i changed to the oil i always used, but found out some part of metal that was hanging on the sump plug. (still got it, will take a pic).

So you all could be right about a circlip to..

Me thinks i best get a recon box 🤔

Really fed up now, wanted to test all the threads on the new box...
The ones for the bellhousing are painted over good, eventually got a bolt in .
But need a tap and die set and i don't have on in UNF 😲

Also the ones for the cover with the breather in... they won't go

Asked a teacher from my work if he got UNF taps, maybe..
Going to see if my local garage has them of another place i know.

If you cannot get any taps. make one out of a spare bolt that is the correct size.

Simply use a hacksaw and put 2 slots in the threads parallel to the length of the bolt - the slots will remove the paint once you get the bolt in the thread = its not as hard or as sharp as a tap. so don't force it, half a turn at the time then undo, clean the slots out and go again, repeat until the thread is clear. you may need to do this with a couple of spare bolts if you have a lot of threads to clear out, as the slots will wear

Asked Shaun if he had any taps and he had some at his work.
This evening popped over (45min drive one way) and re-tapped the holes.
A lot of dirt came out & the 2 1/4 holes for the lid had a lot of dirt in it, think even blasting grit or something.

All good now, pics are on my Spit1500 thread 🙂

Been busy...

Got the box out etc, opened up the top cover.... seems everything has got a lot of play (think)
Drained the oil, and found some more parts of circlip onto the magnetic plug!

This evening going to try to build the OD & Bellhousing onto the new gearbox, then i can put the new one in tomorrow (well whenever my uncle can come over).

I can get it out myself, but getting it in is a lot harder !

And problems... well more money needs to be spend !
Found out the box in my car is an early one, so with a scroll seal 🤔

As that doesn't fit on the new (late ) gearbox i need a new adaptor.
Seems they have 1 in stock in belgium, so will need to get that tomorrow !
Then i can use a rubber seal..

Some pics !

Weel don Wim, ye love tinkerating really.

hope ye put copper washers on the bottom G/Box to bell housing, and some loctite,!!!
as that bolts, direct to inside of box,

re Taps n dies

best get yer self a mechanics set of flea bay
they wont be much,  as carbon steel
but ideal for what ye want, ie cleaning threads an the like

After finding twisted splines on the mainshaft  on a Sunbeam Rapier many years ago I always use the clutch when changing in and out of overdrive figuring that rough changes caused the Rapiers problem.
I know this is a controversial topic that has been discussed previously.
Just my 2 cents worth. (eek)
