willcolumbine
I've been doing a few jobs this weekend and one of the things I've been busy with is changing the diff oil. I've been meaning to do it for ages and I don't know when it was last changed so I thought it'd better go on my list of things to do before the HCR!I managed to drain out about half a litre of foul smelling cats piss oil that looks like it's well past it's best. The question is what to replace it with? Is there any preferred brand or type of oil I need to use? I think I remember GL4 being mentioned. Is that the right stuff? Thanks in advance guys! GT6Craig
I was recommended GL4 as it doesnt re-act with the internal seals like the other stuff. I just used some of Halfrauds own brand.
willcolumbine
Is that the stuff thats in the dark blue bottles and called 'Gear Oil'? I used that in my gearbox buy I wasn't sure if it was good for diffs too!

willcolumbine
Sounds all good then! I've probably got some on the shelf already so I might not even have to go to Halfords. Bonus! :)

Greeks
i've always used SAE 80w-90 for both diff and gearbox on all Triumphs ... but was recently recommended to use a lighter grade of oil for the gearbox... SAE 75w-80.
sparky_spit
As said above make sure it is GL4 spec (the Halfords stuff in blue bottles is). My understanding is that non GL4 can cause issues with yellow metal (brass/bronze) bearings. If you search this forum you will find a very long debate as to whether this really is an issue or just scaremongering. I decided to stick with GL4 just in case.
Slowdown
Be careful!! Some of the Halford's EP80/90 is GL5! Best to check what's written on the actual bottle (yes - I have both!)
willcolumbine
Yeah I noticed they did GL5 and GL4. They sell a lot of similar looking bottles - Some of it is marked 'rear axle oil' and some 'gearbox oil' as well so I just wanted to make sure I got the right stuff. I've got some GL4 left over from the gearbox so I'll just use that. Thanks guys!
