johnmosborneuk
I'm currently cleaning up and painting all of the running gear parts for my 13/60 ready to bolt them on to the freshly painted chassis; I have heard that it is not advisable to paint the propshaft as paint might affect the balance. Is that true? if so what is the best way to protect it from the elements?
RobPearce
I've painted propshafts in the past and not had any trouble. Sure, theoretically, if you don't spread the paint perfectly evenly then it will affect the balance. In reality, though, the mass of the paint is so trivial compared to the mass of the propshaft that you're never going to make a noticeable difference. If you're concerned, mount the prop on something that will spin it at a few tens of RPM, then paint it with a spray can. The spinning will ensure you apply an even coat. ;)
Clive
All the props I have had made or altered cam back painted. Thin coat admittedly, but an aerosol of black should be ok.
