What went wrong and what went right?

Recommended Posts

Well it was our first RBRR and we lost time mostly due to 'fannying about', we spent too long at Blythe (lots of family saying hi, as it's very close to home in Doncaster),we lost a bit of time getting to Blythe with a problem on another car we were in convoy with.
We did probably spend too much time at most of the stops in reality, but the social side of the event is important!
My son wasn't well either so we did have a couple of unscheduled, clean the car up stops too.
Probably our biggest mistake was missing the services at Lancaster. This meant going to the next exit, turning back North, past the services again, to the next exit and back again. Must have lost 20 odd miles and a good half hour on that one.
Wales was fantastic, following the 'Torry Canyon' through the twisty bits has opened Dad's eyes even more to the joys of big saloon ownership, the rain on the M5 was not so great. Overall, I will be back in 2012, perhaps in the pi, perhaps with Amanda, but definately better prepared. Who was the idiot who thought that the roadbook could be transfered to the map in an hour the night before we left......that would be me then.

The car (Amanda's estate) was almost faultless. 27.95mpg over the 2417miles door to door isn't bad, 1.6litres of oil is very acceptable and apart from the overdrive now being operated by two cables and a crimp connection sticking out from the side of the console, all went well.
Although I do think one of the front wheel bearings is making a bit of noise now.

See you all in 2012.

Colin, Bill and Callum Radford team 6.

Well confessed, it's what undoes most crews.

Depends on whether you want to complete the event or not ;-) The thing is, it's a challenge first and a social thing second for me - close second but second all the same. I get all my socialising in the car, hence the importance of a good crew.

Don't be too hard on yourself there, it never ceases to amaze me how much time this can take - I think it took me an hour on the train up to Dave's then about another hour at the Plough - I find it's quite tricky to do but it also shows up where your brain and the road book aren't in harmony! It's these places where you have to be careful or you get lost!

The only real problem that plagued the shed was its hot start problem (and Homers arse) - Hot start issues now fixed my fault for being a tight arse and using second hand coils, put a brand new (ooooeeers) Lucas performance coil on it now fires up a treat at any temperature,as for Homers arse not allot we could do about that!

The RBRR is weird, whilst taking part there will be times when you think why am I doing this event.  However a few good roads and all that vanishes.

After the event I always find that I wish for only one thing and that is to be driving one of the roads again!

I'll be there again in 2012, the 2.5 next time. Already got my co-driver sorted.

2012? Get in. By then, I should have "DEL33" together and run in nicely. I think Mike W will be in the 4x4 stag estate too!

Yes, V8 estates will rule the 2012 RBRR, I am trying to persuade Dave Pearson to bring his along too.

DollyRoo (car 41)  Once again made it all around without a hitch.  Lost one of my magnetic signs and a dodgey wire in the left rear turn signal.  Did not use any oil and got 32mph.  I have to say I had one of the best crew's one could have.  Ferney was a GREAT addition, and was by far the best driver.  While I will only do a event like this with three it is important one has a good team that gets along well.  Only regret is the lack of time to talk to all of you.  This was my third run and I know all too well just how important that the car is in tip top shape before hand.  I owe much and can never repay Carl for all the work he did on the car.  I feel bad for those who did not finish and had problems.  Words can tell the feeling when I passed Pat Barbor's car on it's side.  It was good to see Pat and his co driver standing so I knew they wern't serious'ly hurt.  While kinda my trademark, I think I will retire the hat!  Left it in the boot of the car.  Looking forward to seeing you-all on my next trip over the pond.  Congrats to all who too part and a big thanks to those who made it possible.

This is going to be a brief forum foray as I'm currently up past my ar*e in Novembers mag. We had two problems excluding the curry Catherine (my wife) made for me the night before to get her own back on Matt (our son) for several years of olfactory abuse before he left the barcarolle (Barker 'ole geddit?) a couple of years back.

Problem 1. A power draining misfire up hills in Scotland on Saturday afternoon. I thought that this was yet more duff sh*te ignition parts which I had been plagued with before starting the event after changing everything as a precautionary measure during prep - ended up putting half of the old stuff back on and cured the previous misfire. This eventually turned out, I believe to be water in the fuel, picked up around Edinburgh in a spare can which we put in before Conon Bridge when low, after which the misfire appeared. Changed everything ignition wise again to ne avail, then eventually the misfire became less serious then went!

Problem 2. Broken driveshaft just after passing the highest point on Rannoch Moor, the most desolate place in Britain? Not much you can do with that one unless you happen to have a spare in the boot, so called the AA and waited.

Did I say that this would be brief?
