WIMPUS Posted January 3, 2019 Share Posted January 3, 2019 Hi all. Got a bit of a problem with the Fox. Sometimes when i want to drive off the rear wheels blocks ! Can feel the prop turning but not the rest.. Or like this morning, drove backwords of the driveway, i drive off..'loud' knocking sound.. Thought it could be one of the halfshaft/prop bolts that came loose and was catching, but all is tight.. My original diff was rebuild by a well known UK specialist and fitted in august 2017, done 33.000km/20.500miles. The halfshafts are new full assembly's, also from a well known supplier last summer. Need to inspect these inside the drums etc. Anyone know anything else to look at ? :/ Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Hogie Posted January 3, 2019 Share Posted January 3, 2019 Hi Wim, that sounds most odd. How do you know the prop is turning when you say the wheels are blocked (not turning). Normally i have checked those bolts, but going to get in on a lift to have a better look. Marcus (GT6) said it could be a tooth that broke off and that sometimes slides inbetween. The big nut holding the pinion in place came loose and the pinion was knocking on something. The split pin in the nut was not fitted. thescrapman Posted January 3, 2019 Share Posted January 3, 2019 Try the bolts that hold the front mount to the diff. had same issue on 2 cars, each time spotted when the bolts gets knocked out. Tonyfrench Posted January 4, 2019 Share Posted January 4, 2019 Wim, a couple of things. First, check the hand brake cable length is correctly adjusted on the cable that comes from the lever (not the one that goes across the car). If it is incorrectly adjusted it can hook up on the propshaft and as soon as you move it snags and reapplies the hand brake. When you move the car the opposite way the handbrake releases. The setting is in thevTriumph repair manual. Also, make sure that the noise you hear is not the brake shoes binding on the drums and then releasing. On my diff, one of the Allen bolts that hold the beaings into the diff had come loose and was catcking on the prop shaft bolts (to the point where it got bent and I didn’t notice it till the diff was removed). It's more like they put a metal rod between the moving parts And the noise i heard a few times is a knocking sound. Bolts are all checked and are tight. WIMPUS Posted January 5, 2019 Author Share Posted January 5, 2019 Today drained the oil, nothing on the magnet and let the oil run into mesh filter.. nothing. Then i had a look inside.All teeth are still present, nothing broken off.But seen some play on the planet gears (dont know if this is usual or not)And it has some backlash to. Velocita Rosso Posted January 5, 2019 Share Posted January 5, 2019 My advice Wim is : disconnect the prop then check for same noise, by back and forth rotation of diff flange, if still clunky,take the diff out and bench test.Then dismantle. You could be days scratching your head listening for the clunk. On the first video I think i can see some further play on the pinion shaft rather than the gears .Far easier to examine when out of the car. However if you then check the prop shaft,when out, and if you still hear the clunk....then its the UJs ......or stupidly gear box..it s amazing how noises transmit Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

But one end has a sliding joint and the other an UJ. Dont know what to do as if i take the diff our she cant drive... And i need her.. :( But i did found a good checked diff from Marcus. Nothing found (but drums etc needed a hood cleanout) Small jobs i do at the evening. Bigger ones in the weekend (then i can use the lift at work to).
