  1. Heralds originally came shod with crossplies, unless you specified the optional radials I suspect. 5.20*13 was teh crossply size. Equivalent is a 155/80-13 radial. Driving on crossplies may actually make it feel better, I had them on my spitfire when I bought it, but radials must surely be a better bet. Cheers Colin

Mikes inability to ever be on time anywhere is an embarrassment to me. But after 30+ years I have given up hope of ever curing him. At least we now know what he was doing in 2010 that made him late..  ;) So that is why I have recruited some far better co-drivers to ensure we are on time this year. Cheers Colin
  3. It's OK, you don't need to turn up on time, I never seem to be able to, best just to crash in about 45 mins after Tim has started talking, he doesn't mind at all. :-)
  4. A decent set of original discs and calipers, with pads of a material better than lots of the dross on offer now-a-days should be more than up to the job. So Mintex 1144 may be a good idea. Braided hoses will remove some of the slight sponginess from the system. Make sure the servo is working properly, the correct amount of assistance will help. Also makesure there is the correct amount of play in the wheel bearings, as too much will cause pad push back giving more pedal travel. You will probably need to use the old calipers as exchanges, but if not, let me know. Cheers Colin
  5. Morning Tim Steve probably isn't, but people we know are so to speak, so something could be arranged i am sure. Cheers Colin

  8. MikeyB wrote:I must admit I'm not missing the pre RBRR adrenalin hiked last minute maintenance/firefighting! With two incomplete major house projects on the go, spare time is rather elusive at the moment - but if you're really stuck, give us a shout   :) This isn't last minute, I have 2 months to go! More like general maintenance. And also bear in mind I am doing 3 cars simultaneously, rather than just the one that you had to do. So that puts me in a totally different league.. ;-) Not at all like you who starts with 2 days to go just to get your adrenaline rush. The car was ready 4 weeks ago, that is the annoying thing. :-( Colin
  9. You will be getting a call when i am ready to do the Grenn car!
  10. My jack doesn't go high enough, teh diff also rolls off it, and onto me as I try to do the last 6 inches. I also don't do lying under cars, it makes me sick. can only do sideways or face down. pain in the a**e :-(
  11. All apart and the flange was loose, but it was not possible to tighten it any more, so new flange and quill shaft fitted, and then attached to the spare diff. Diff back under car (how I hate that job), and now indoors massaging bruises and crushed fingers. Only dropped it on myself 3 ro 4 times, so getting better. :-( There must be a way of preventing hurting myself so much, perhaps an assistant is required.... :-)
  12. MikeyB wrote:impressed you got hubs apart!    :) I didn't... they are being dealt with professionally as I want it fixed asap. one bearing sounded like it was full of gravel..... :-( Will be down to practise on some spare hubs with the press soon.
  13. Hopefully diff will come out this afternoon for a look. Just been stripping down the driveshafts this morning, time for 2 new bearings and 4 new UJ's. After 43 years and 120k miles I think they have probably passed their prime. (though one may have only done 50k miles as I mayhave swapped it, still 40+ years old mind!) The grease in the UJ's has a really odd small, very sulphourous. Cheers Colin
  14. Morning all Whilst dismantling my PI I haven oticed that there is slight in and out movement on the input flange of the diff. slight but visible. It had a new bearing about 10k miles ago. 2 of my spare nose peices have the same play, on assumed original bearings. The spare diff that seems very good  (and is destined for the car), has not play at all on an unknown bearing. Now should there be any in/out movement (I am assuming not) and does it actually matter?? Cheers Colin
  15. Well things went from bad to worse, i broke the backup car on Wednesday, Diff gone in that as well, only worse! Came off the A12 and a banshee came wailing up behind us... :-( Suspected no oil in diff, confirmed when I got home and smelt the grass where it had been parked. Seems the new oil seal didn't last very long.. :-( So for the first time in many years I become "working Triumph-less" as the gearbox in the Spitfire failed going to the Autosolo. :-( :-( Been out in the garage starting the repairs on teh Spitfire, and got 17 days off work, so should see some progress... :-)
  16. That boss does seem quite deep. Anyone else have any thoughts?
  17. You might be able to move the whole column back a little bit. Do you have a side on shot of the wheel?
  18. peterhlewis wrote: in engineering terms 150lbs ft is not that monumental , I came across a Torque Wrench calibrator recently, it seems to be for up to at least 2500lb/ft so 150 is nothing (and would barely make the needle move! ) How long would the handle have to be to do something up to 2000lb/ft??? Mmmmmmm :-)
  19. Raider wrote: I confess I am guessing it's Colin with Michael - just TBA really for the moment ;) It is a TBA still. A very TBA. I have shifted all my on call away from the main Olympic games, so have lots in late Aug / Sept. It has come to the attention of my colleagues that they have been stitched up good and proper... :-) I suspect revenge will be a dish best served cold
  20. One of the importers of cars from the US is probably your only hope. And they must be drying up now. You could try TRGB, they have had imported stuff in teh past. I think nearly every panel is available fro TR6's so what you have ought to be rebuildable. Cheers Colin

  22. New door seals are not the correct profile, but you have just found that out...  :-/ You will need to cut slots through the carpet and sound deadening to bolt teh runners direct to the floor. Cheers Colin
  23. I think youu will need to raise it slightly. Quite a few people are running the 15inch MGF wheels, so they should be OK. I am sure they will pipe up in a moment. There of course may be variants that do not fit properly. Cheers Colin
  24. I suspect Steves bearings are the Tin/ally ones rather than the tri-metal. Crank is alledgedly still on STD's. Very careful measuring needed I think. Cheers Colin
