The Stag J Type overdrive engages and then almost immediately disengages, and then refuses to engage again.

I suspect I'll have to take the filter housing of to see if they are blocked.

One of the bolts to the rectangular plate has a stripped thread and there is a minor leak from there. No sure if that can be done in situ or whether the unit need to be removed a stripped to repair the thread.

Check electrics. Is the solenoid working as it should ? Or even the switch, I've had one that jumped in and out of O/D because of faulty switch.

OD switches (in gear knob type) can be so that after a while they fail to operate.  I've had two and both did the same.  Ended up prying the switch apart and seeing how it is supposed to work and why it wasn't.  A litte creativity will solve the problem if the trouble is here.

But I think you are right, that it is off with the rectangular plate.....

At the moment mine is the opposite, takes forever to disengage....

Hard wire it, wid a switch in yer lap / hands.    then if its okeedokee, then its not the OD

there wee contacts inside the great bigg nut switches, and they doo get oil in em.
took quite a few to bits like this, all oily and contacts dirty.

The wires to the switch often break due to fatigue.

That would be my bet.  It can be changed with the gearbox in situ
