Has anyone here log booked a car recently? As I understand it, a circuit racing car does not need log booking, unless 'historic', but rally cars do.

I MAY be taking possession of a boy-hood dream toy soon, that is well built, but not 'log booked', and I was wondering if anyone has done it recently.

I've read in the blue book etc what is needed, but I can't find out how difficult it is to obtain it. I know that sometimes people in charge can get funny about signing things off...

You are quite right, but then you've read the Blue Book more recently than I have!
And I don't have a rally car, but I know a man who does, and I asked him.
He says that the MSA will be helpful, not hindering.  If the car has been registered with them before, they will have the records, and will provide you with copies and all the paperwork to get the Logbook up to date.

All I'd say is that there is a difference between "people being funny" and the regulations in the Blue Book, and those of a championship you want to enter.  If you are in any doubt, then discuss it with them, the MSA or the series secretary.
For instance, I race in the CSCC "Swinging '60s" series, and a Vitesse should be in Group 2, with the other 6's and more, Loti, Camaros, Scimitars, TVRs etc.  But I'd be Johnny Backmarker, so I asked if I might race in Gp 1, withother Triumphs, inc. a GT6, Minis, MGBs etc   More fun for all.  Most clubs/organisers are most interested in getting people out racing/rallying, not excluding anyone for piddling reasons.

If you are looking to get it log booked for rallying speak with your local MSA scrutineer who will be listed in the "blue book" they will help and advise on what needs doing. They will be the person inspecting and filling in the forms on behalf of the MSA.
If it is for racing and you have a championship in mind get in touch with the championship scrutineer.

All the guys I've had dealings with are very approachable and helpful and offer very good advise

My intention is to log book it for rallying, and running in the BTRDA Tarmac series. Unfortunately that's been canned for 2017 whilst the organisers regroup etc, so I may run it as a race car in the 750MC in the mean time, as long as there aren't any modifications that directly contravene each other.

We'll see how I get on and I'll report back if I do become the proud owner of a 1988 ******* ****** ***...

How did your contacts with the MSA go, getting a new log book?

And what car is it?   You mention racing with 750MC;   I race with CSCC, Swinging 60s, and there are a few other Triumphs who turn out too.

Have to say that the CSCC has announced that for 2107, they will enforce the Sw.60s Group rules, "to even up the grids".
This will separate me from the Spitfires, who usually beat me, but bring any GT6s and TRs into Gp 2 as well, so not so bad.

I'll be trying to contest all the events in the 2017 series, other commitments permitting

Sorry, I didn't see your reply to this thread.

The car in question was a Peugeot 205 GTi 1.6, but built into a newer shell, just to be confusing.

Anyway, the seller and i couldn't come to a deal we were both happy with (looking back now I probably should have just gone for it as it was a good price even if the car was a little rough round the edges), and I tried contacting various people in the MSA and no-one got back to me at all with answers about log booking etc, so the project fell by the wayside sadly.

I'm sorry the project fell through, and that you were struggling with finding out how to get a logbook.
I imagine that you became familiar with Section R of the Blue Book and maybe Paras 19.1.etc on Historics (I'm guessing about your Pug).  There's quite a lot of new stuff in red in the 2017 version: https://www.msauk.org/assets/bluebook2017completevlow-res.pdf

It was one of the sticking points for me on the car actually John; it was advertised as one thing, and they'd tried to log book it, but failed because they were trying to pass it off as historic, but because it was a newer shell they couldn't. Apparently the early and late GTis have different dashboards and aren't interchangeable, so it's very obvious if a car is or isn't early etc. I was mainly interested in it as a stupid winter car (it came with both mud/gravel and winter tarmac tyres that were road legal-ish), but there were a few other bits I didn't like either - the welding on the cage feet was suspect, the wiring wasn't good and it didn't come with any seats or harnesses (the ad had said it would).

Essentially, it didn't add up to what they were asking.

Then, as you'd alluded to, as I read it I knew there would be issues log booking the car either as an early or late car. I'm sure I'll find the right GTi at some point...

I don't think the issue for the MSA is that the car is actually historic, came out of the factory before a certain date, but that it is now in historic trim and build.
Today, Mk2 Escort shells are being produced and built into perfectly good and accepted Historic rally cars.  Imagine -  a brand new Mk.2 Escort!
But a later car may not easily be made into a compliant earlier version.     You couldn't put a Mk6 Ecort into Mk2 spec!

That's what I meant John, the car was a later shell claiming to be an earlier car, and it was across the divide of what was historic and not historic. Plus as the MSA had already rumbled it was a late car, I wouldn't have had a hope in tell of applying for log booking again and try to get it in as historic...

If you do ever manage to get a 205GTi, have fun, they are tremendous little cars. I had a 1.9 and 2 309 GTi 1.9s and loved everything about them, fantastic fun.

One of my oldest friends has a 205 Rallye that he bought to the UK from Hungary, pukka one, not the awful UK version. Colour coded front suspension, webers, a real little flying machine. 1.3 and revs its little heart off! Marvelous.

Rest assured Tim, it's a case of WHEN I get a 205GTi, not if. I also would like a 309 Goodwood, but they're even rarer.

My ideal would be a white 1.6 GTi with red carpets and red seat belts, or a red car. An old Scout leader of mine had one and I remember bombing through the Breacon Beacons in it on the way to a weekend camp. Hilarious fun, and pretty quite for the time. Not bad now either. However, I was looking at the rally cars as they tend to be cheaper than a standard road car, if a little rougher round the edges.

A friend had the 205 1.4 XS, that was pretty nippy too, not seen a Rallye in years, and even the 106 Rallyes are daft money now.
