Toby
Hi - I bought a replacement 1300 cylinder head off ebay for my MkIV Spitfire. After fitting it the rocker arms don't line up with the top of the valve stems (see pic) Anyone have any idea what's going on here? Maybe the head isn't a 1300?Thanks in advance
Clive
Valve tops look like herald ones, so would be 1300.The worrysome bit is the end one, it def can't be repaced by the looks of it.Were they the rockers that came with the head, or off your old one? Toby
The rockers are from the old head. Are the rockers different on a 1300 Herald do you know? Looking at Rimmers online catalog they appear to be the same part...
heraldcoupe
The rocker shafts differ between six and eight port head types. If the head fits, so should the rocker shaft. Did the shaft get dismantled and reassembled, or did it go onto the new head exactly as removed?Cheers,Bill.
Toby
The rocker assembly wasn't dismantled - just swapped over.Otherwise the head seems to fit perfectly...The number stamped on the head is 307240 if that helps...
That Man
Are all the exhaust rockers out of position or just the rear two ?
Toby
It's all the exhaust rockers. Numbers 2 & 3 could probably be solved by swapping the spacer to the other side, but 1 & 4 look like a different pedestal is required. But I can't see any relevant part numbers on canleys or rimmers. That Man
I've just had a quick measure of a spare 1300 head in the shed and :-The distance for the centre of the inlet valve to the exhaust valve on the same cylinder is 1 7/16" (36.5mm)The distance between the centres of No.2 cylinder and No. 3 cylinder exhaust valves is 1 7/8" (47.6mm)I only measured with a steel rule, so not exact ;)This is not one i've come across before. But the question is though which is the correct one, the new head or the old one ?Gordon

mikeyb
are the two heads the same height?
Toby
The height isn't noticeably different, although I haven't measured it - what would a height difference indicate?
Slimboyfat
http://www.canleyclassics.com/searchforapart/?desc=&ptno=307240Used for a very limited period early in 1300 FWD, and 13/60 production, and very rare.It has different valve spacing (shared with 70X head) and as a consequence used 'special' rocker pedestals. Try and get the complete rocker shaft assembly from the guy you purchased the head from. It's not worth ringing around the the usual spares specialists for it. They will either not have a clue what you are after, or they are fully aware of what they are and are guarding any stock for their own use 8).There is a rather involved bodge to get around it if you have the patience, give me a ring if you want to know how. plk21e
why not resell the special head and use the cash to buy another 1300 head you will most likely make a profit

Well I never - very interesting! But a pain in the a*** as far as I'm concerned. I use the car as my daily driver and I need it back on the road ASAP.Does anyone have a decent 1300 head they want to swap for this one? I'm in North London... JensH
I do have a 307240 head on a GE engine (in my old spit mk 3). Didn't know it was different!Any advantage - except not being able to get a complete new rocker shaft assembly?
thescrapman
Mr SBFAre you saying the head is very rare and thus sought after (but not necessarily valuable), or is it the rocker assembly that is useful?Or are they only valuable only as a pair.Anyway, TobyI have plenty of spare heads at home, not 100% sure of condition, what are you looking for?Built up and ready to go, or one for cleaning up and fitting new valves to etc?CheersColin
