Glenn Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Can anyone help please? I'd like to make a replacement cable for the gearstick but I don't know where to get the slim round connectors which plug into the gearknob overdrive switch.Anyone know what type these are and where I might get some?I see there are replacement gearstick looms on Ebay but they look like they are made with blue/ brown mains cable which has to be too thick for the job. Hence prefer to make my own. :-/
willcolumbine Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I looked for these for ages with no luck. Everything that fitted was too long to go inside the knob. In the end I bought the wire from Canleys but even then I had to chop the bullet connectors off the other end so that I could get the wiring to run through the stick.
Doug Paterson Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I use small spade connectors from Maplins (the tiny ones, about 2.5-3mm wide and pinch the in with pliers so that they will grip the connections on the switch. Has proved very reliable so far.
Jason Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 I think the connectors are the same as those for speakers - you could try http://www.autosparks.co.uk always very helpful
mikew Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 The connectors are a circular split cylinder - although others may fit.I just purchased a stag gearstick loom from rimmers part 153726 £6.36mike
Richard B Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 A friend made some for me out of small brass tube, need to get the right diameter.Cut a slot in it and soldered the wire.Alternatively the small spade connectors are a good fit.
Glenn Posted March 15, 2010 Author Posted March 15, 2010 Thanks folks.I'll try to get some of those mini spade terminals and give that a go. Although the Rimmer's loom sounds good value....I do wonder if there's an off the shelf connector somewhere designed to fit inside a modern connector plug....? I expect I'll just have to order up a few to try and see.
lordleonusa Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 they are german speaker connectors, and you can get them from rarebits4classics.comL
Tim Bancroft Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 I used to do the same as Doug P., always satisfactory.Got to say that I rather the works type switch I now use on the GT6, no chaffing as the wires run on the outside of the lever. The toggle switch is a delight to use.
esxefi Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 vehiclewiringproducts do them, not exactly the same but you would be hard pushed to tell the difference :)http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-onlinestore/terminalsnonins/noninsbullets.php
don cook1 Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 As Lordleonusa suggests: Rarebits do a small harness all ready to go!

It's really much easier to unbolt the gear lever from the car, take it to the work bench and make up your own harness. I used the mini speaker connectors, they were crimp type with insulation but I took the insulation off, crimped and soldered them then put some heat shrink tubing over the top. Then after threading the wires through the gear stick I added heat shrink tubing to join the two wires where they exited from the lower part of the gear lever and crimped two bullet connectors on the end.... Simples. ;)

The guy i bought off is called Anglian Triumph and here is the link http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370121761869&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:ITSteve
