2.5pi engine - what do I need to know?

Hey guys,

I've got a 2.5pi engine (complete with all the injection gear) that I said I'd help my Dad sell (he's had 3 estates, a couple of saloons and a couple of Dolomites over the years).

This isn't a sales pitch, by the way.

After reading a couple of threads on here, where people are discussing the 2.5 engine, it seems that there's stuff / info that I should be including with the sales listing (engine no.s etc.).

My question to you guys is... What sort of info would you want to see on a listing / ad for this engine? Because my Dad would rather see his engine go to some use and not just scrap (unless that's all it's worth).

Thanks in advance for any pointers you can give.

Cheers, Phil.

Phil don't worry about things seeming a sales pitch - if someone wants it this is one of the best places to find out and you would be helping a club member ..... which is what this Forum is all about.

Suggest the sort of money you will be looking for or simply see what offer(s) you get.

Give some idea of mileage/condition/history if you have any.

If you give the engine number helps whether this is Mk1 (number starts CR) or Mk2 (number starts MG) PI engine.

State precisely what PI stuff comes with the engine such as - Throttle bodies/fuel pump/fuel filter/pressure release valve/injector pipes/metering unit (and whether one it distributor pedestal)/injectors

If you don't have everything it will still help anyone who is interested.

Say which pat of the country you are in - distance for collection makes a big difference as to whether someone is interested.

A Mk1 engine pretty complete and near the Forest of Dean and not too costly I may even have been interested!

Hey Ted,

That's a great help, thanks.

I don't have all the info to hand so rather than keep posting dribs and drabs, I'll get it all together and post it one go.

Once again, thanks. I appreciate your help.

Phil.

Images here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/t1ommjn9oftcsip/AACvkpRfxufO_YKPRVshe2ZQa?dl=0 (photos taken today)

Location is ten minutes off Jct 8, M11 (Stansted Airport).

OK, so it turns out that the engine was stored outside but undercover. However, at some point, the tarp had blown off and not replaced so there's a lot of surface debris on the engine.

As you can see from the photos, there's a rust hole in the sump. This was literally caused by the sump rusting while the engine was sat in place on the ground, because when it was moved (a couple of months ago) oil flooded out!

The mud, visible in the inlet pipes, was from the engine toppling over when my Dad tried to move the engine on his own (he's in his seventies but thinks he's 17 still - which is great!)

I popped the oil filler cap off and photographed it. I'll be honest, it doesn't look great in there. It's rusty. Surface rust from where the engine's been sat for years (possibly decades).

I've been told the engine's from a '72 car and has done over 100k. It's also lost compression on one cylinder (cause unknown) which was why it was originally removed from the car.

I imagine, from Ted's reply (above), that if there's any value to anyone in this engine it probably comes from the injection kit that's on it (as it's a MK2 engine, not MK1, and in a bit of a state).

That said, I've no idea of its value (if anything) and neither does my Dad. So he's open to offers, if it's of use to anyone.

If the lump's worthless, but the injection kit's worth something, I'd probably consider removing it from the lump and selling it separate (so it opens it up to anyone who doesn't want the entire engine or can't pick it up)

You can email me any questions / offers at: triumph at moo dot digital (I can't seem to get notifications of any replies on triumph.org.uk)

Cheers, Phil.

Hate to say this Phil but the general state of that engine may be terminal.

The view in the rocker cover looks bad and suggests water had got into the top of the head, the sump pan has had it though a replacement could be sourced, the block itself looks well rusted and cannot tell how much of problem there may be in there.

The parts of the PI system are also probably not serviceable. The metering unit may be OK but will need an expensive service, and doubt if of the distributor will be any good.  Finally because of the way the engine has been exposed to the elements and the throttle bodies look as though they have been resting in soil I doubt whether they can even be serviced.

To me it looks as though it may have had it. However someone may feel worth making an offer if they can identify some bits they can use.

Thanks for letting us know about it but in my humble opinion it is really down to seeing if anyone could possible make use of some interior bits though with the mileage not much may be serviceable.

A pity as PI engines are sought after even if needing a rebuild, but really think this one is past it.

Open it up to offers and see if there is any response.

Hey Ted,

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate the help / input.

I'll have a chat with my Dad and see what he wants to do with it. I expect he'll go down the "ebay with a 99p start price" or something.

I think he'd still rather it went to some use (even for 99p) than just weighed in at a breakers yard though! But if it doesn't sell then can't say fairer than that.

If / when it's listed I'll pop back here and post the link (as long as that's not against forum rules?).

Again, thanks for your help :)

Phil.

I will bid £ 1 provided delivery to Northern Ireland is included.😆. Regardless of condition parts will be useful to someone. Even the PI kit, a bucket of diesel and time work wonders. DO NOT SCRAP IT !! Even if you give it away. I like free stuff.
