Davemate
What alternator do I ask for at my local car spares, looking at pictures it looks like an ACR but which one 15-16-17 or
Dogsbody47uk
As far as I know the only difference is the amps output. How many do you need? Mine gives 36 amps. I think it's a 17 Acr, but I'm not sure. Cheers, Dave.
Davemate
Will it fit a 2.5 with HS6 carbs, not sure if I'd read that a "A" type won't fit, quite happy to be wrong
Matt George
I've got an 'A' type fitted to my 2500 on HS6s. From memory the clearance is tight between the battery and alternator, but it does clear. May be due to the fact that the battery is quite a big one.My unit is an uprated 65amp one for a Stag. piman
Hello Dave, The 17ACr is known as an LRA100 in the market place I believe?Alec
RobPearce
Quoted from piman The 17ACr is known as an LRA100 in the market place I believe? Almost. The 17ACR is an original fitment / brand new Lucas part, where the LRA100 is (or certainly used to be) a reconditioned one. It's meant to be compatible but may not match identically. Davemate
Thanks chaps,my local car spares gaff is quite large and they normally go by your reg but I don't want a dynamo
piman
Hello Rob, whenever I wanted an alternator and asked for an ACR17, the LRA100 is what I was given, it looked brand new and I didn't put my old unit in?Alec
RobPearce
Quite likely, Alec. I suspect the distinction faded out rather as the ACR17 became obsolete - some time in the 1980s.
piman
Hello Rob, " some time in the 1980s"That's fine, my cars a 1968 and so is my mentality.Alec
Davemate
New alternator fitted so now on idle no more red light coming on 🙂
TedTaylor
From the early 1990s when Steph and I used to Autojumble as sellers and buyers I acquired a couple of genuine Lucas alternator conversion kits. Filled the May 1965 kit into the July 1964 Mk1, quite a faff to fit but kept things in period.MUT
Davemate
Quoted from Spitfire6 Hi Davemate,Nice one. What alternator did you end up buying to fix the problem? What do you think was the problem on the old one?Cheers,Iain. I'll have a look at the box tomorrow to see what I bought !Anything under about 900 revs and the ignition light came on.Now the alternator is fitted I've noticed a few things Indicators flash quicker even on tickover and the indicator lights on the dash seem brighter Headlights seem a touch better
