Alex
I need to fit new ujs to my heralds drive shafts and wondered if it matters which way round they go?I've gone for the greaseable type so does the grease nipple face the wheel or the differential?...... Or does it make no difference? Thanks Alex
Richard B
The diff.Bit awkward to regrease when it faces the wheel as the backplate gets in the way of the grease gun.If you can be arsed to regrease it that is... 8)
heraldcoupe
The nipple has to face away from the flange,Cheers,Bill.
Alex
Thanks Richard and Bill..... But do your replys contradict each other?I'd have thought to face the diff it would be facing the flange?:-/ThanksAlex
Richard B
Bill's right, I'm wrong. :BI was thinking of a U/J by the wheel and brakes. Not a U/J by the diff which obviously you have as it is a swing axle car.

Alex
Oh dear..... I've fitted the uj so the nipple points away .... But there's no room for the nipple??
Steve P
I think most people remove the nipple after greasing and stick a blanking plug in them, mine fouled the yolk.I went CV after eating two driveshafts.Steve
Alex
I can't even get the nipple into one of the ujs.... Didn't try the other although it looked a bit more likely .....Do people use the long ones that come with the ujs or fit different ones for greasing? Alex
The nipples went in before but the angles all wrong to clear the yoke now. These are gkn ujs?
Velocita Rosso
Don`t think GKN make UJ`s in this country,Driveline may be in Brazil or USAI buy from BRT through an agent in Doncaster
heraldcoupe
The nipples won't fit when the suspension drops, it's one of the reasons you can't leave the nipples in place. With the suspension level you will be able to fit the nipple, alternatively it can be fitted when the face of the joint points forward or backwards, though this gets fiddly. In practice, I've rarely re-greased UJs once the assembly is on the car. The main benefit of the greasable joints is the ability to properly charge them with grease after their initial assembly, something which is practically impossible with sealed types. Cheers,Bill.
