Standard springs definitely must be removed with a spring compressor!  But if shorter stiffer springs have been fitted then when the car is up on stands and the suspension is fully down the springs may be loose on the shockers.   Then, a compressor is not needed.

On the original Triumphs at least, the combined spring/damper unit is fixed to the lower wishbone by one bolt and to the suspension tower by 3 nuts at the top.  This complete unit can be removed from the car without a spring compressor provided the centre nut is in place.

To remove the spring from the damper you do need spring compressors (and many of the universal types are too big to fit properly) to compress the spring before undoing the centre nut.  Care needed, there is alot of energy stored......

It's one job I hate after throwing a top nut on a damper unit - made a bloody big clang and the nut went through the shed wall near enough!

UNITs CAN be removed from the car complete without a spring compressor. But not the individual spring - as has been said further up the post.

Now I always put a ratchet strap around the spring and compressors in case they slip in use, it at least holds them vaguely in place.
