Jason
I could do without a reputation for crank snapping but I guess it's a by product of tuning :-)Here's the other piece of the crank

Deleted User
When I snapped the crank in a 1500 Spit, only the crank was FUBAR. A new crank, and new bearings and the engine was right as rain.

Jason
I'll pull the spare 2.5 engine apart and have a look at the rods - I agree, time to start again there :-) I just need to dredge up some money!

Mind you, I could be set to loose it as I have just been given a job that may involve going to India, I'm not sure why I've been given this role as I'm no fan of offshoring, the concensus is that we may be "modifying the footprint" - ie bring it back! I await a consultation with my new boss, in the meantime - I'll work on the Vitesse :-)
Jason
I was looking through the history file that came with the Vitesse as I felt sure there was a receipt for balancing in there - here you go, it was a Jigsaw job. Now I know Jigsaw don't have the facilities to do this work so they must have farmed it out somewhere but I don't know where. I'm not going to pass comment or make any insinuations, here are the facts only, draw whatever conclusions you like. Probably best not to express them publicly. This was a fast road engine, driven fast, thrashed often - it's demise was sudden but not unexpected - responsibility for it's ressurection is mine. Oh, and it will rise again 8) I'll be using my own trusted specialist to help me rebuild. Somethin I have been heartened by and I'd like to share is the response from you lot - the Triumph owning public. I've got offers of help, offers of parts and even the prospect of a brand new crank (subject to finding it in the owner's shed :-) as well as phone calls of advice. I know snapping a crank isn't the end of the world but isn't it great that people rally round - thank you all! <wipes dewey eye>I've fixed my inspection lamp so will be out stripping later :-)
Richard B
Jason would you mind posting a photograph of the con-rod? I would like to see the areas Dave is criticising. Just so I know what techniques/areas to avoid.
Jason
go to my blog (from the link in my sig) and click on the photo, it will come up full size. I will take some photos of the whole lot tomorrow and post them on the blog.

I am going to keep this as a memento - I'd put it with my folded double wishbone from my first Vitesse but my wife threw it out one day (OK so I set it on a mount and put it on the mantle piece - she wasn't impressed)
Alex
Josh,I'm sure if he uses people he's used and trusted before he'll be fine. Jason,Glad to hear everyone is looking out for you,its what makes CT special!
Deleted User
if you compare this pic ( one of my motors) with the pic of Jasons you will see the difference in how the rods look , hopefully illustrate what DS is on about.. hey but what do i know? hehe
Nick Jones
Looks better! Have those rods been shot-peened after all the other work done?Nick
Deleted User
yes shot peened, for anyone who doesn't know it is the very last process, merely hacking bits off areas that are stressed will weaken it, when lightening stuff consideration needs to be given to stress relieving too, by keeping everything smooth and rounded, no sharp edges etc. I bet Jason's rods are alot weaker than stock now, judging by the hack marks. The peening increases strength by adding lots of tiny dimbles over the suface, reducing any tiny edges that could give rise to cracks, and failure. when shot peening, shot material, size, intensity and velocity needs to be correct for the type of metal being treated
Alex
so would that be like if you have a contour crease in a body panel it makes the panel stronger?please excuse my ignorance :B
Deleted User
contour creases are to improve regidity, not to increase tensile strength.
