Well I can't see anything else obviously fubar but I need to strip the whole lot really - the main bearing cap looks OK as in fact do the mains - the big end on No 6 will be interesting but No 6 con rod looks OK

p.s. on second thoughts..........

Is there a market for body fat then?

Mind you, I could be set to loose it as I have just been given a job that may involve going to India, I'm not sure why I've been given this role as I'm no fan of offshoring, the concensus is that we may be "modifying the footprint" - ie bring it back! I await a consultation with my new boss, in the meantime - I'll work on the Vitesse :-)

I was looking through the history file that came with the Vitesse as I felt sure there was a receipt for balancing in there - here you go, it was a Jigsaw job. Now I know Jigsaw don't have the facilities to do this work so they must have farmed it out somewhere but I don't know where. I'm not going to pass comment or make any insinuations, here are the facts only, draw whatever conclusions you like. Probably best not to express them publicly. This was a fast road engine, driven fast, thrashed often - it's demise was sudden but not unexpected - responsibility for it's ressurection is mine. Oh, and it will rise again  8) I'll be using my own trusted specialist to help me rebuild.

Somethin I have been heartened by and I'd like to share is the response from you lot - the Triumph owning public. I've got offers of help, offers of parts and even the prospect of a brand new crank (subject to finding it in the owner's shed :-) as well as phone calls of advice. I know snapping a crank isn't the end of the world but isn't it great that people rally round - thank you all! <wipes dewey eye>

I've fixed my inspection lamp so will be out stripping later :-)

still ran but had a nasty knock,[/quote]

David - my car ran but the "knock" was deafening and more like a banging! I am going to keep this as a memento - I'd put it with my folded double wishbone from my first Vitesse but my wife threw it out one day (OK so I set it on a mount and put it on the mantle piece - she wasn't impressed)

yes shot peened, for anyone who doesn't know it is the very last process, merely hacking bits off  areas that are stressed will weaken it, when lightening stuff consideration needs to be given to  stress relieving too, by keeping everything smooth and rounded, no sharp edges etc. I bet Jason's rods are alot weaker than stock now, judging by the hack marks. The peening increases strength by adding lots of tiny dimbles over the suface, reducing any tiny edges that could give rise to cracks, and failure.
when shot peening, shot material,  size, intensity and velocity needs to be correct for the type of metal being treated
