Do you have access to a pop-tester as used for diesel (old fashioned diesel now) injectors? They are intended for higher pressures but should still be good for checking that your injectors pop at 50psi.

not equipped with that stuff😕

I bought a cheap one from India to help me refurb the injectors on my A6 TDI.  Worked ok but leaked alot as delivered....  Just needed the various screwed joints remaking with proper sealant.

news...

😀 New fuel pump fitted + cleaned injectors (waiting for 2 NOS from USA).

Tried to fire the engine... 😊

Did not 😒

fuel coming slowly to the injectors "maybe not" (sorry, i'm great fan of Derek from Vice Grip Garage 😄)... but other issues unspotted yet :

  1. no spark (plugs new, electronic module in distributor, rotor arm... all new)🤔
  2. no 12v to the ignition coil (new heavy duty)🤔
  3. and when trying to spot the problem... new issue no more swicth ignition! 😤

Formerly, i had dasboard  lights on key contact, fuel pump engaged, engine rotating... now nothing on the switch, and clock watch ticking but not all the time (LOL 😅 joke)... so, could it all be in cause that switch key module ? any other possibilities?

meanwhile, 2 batteries are charging to be ready for next attempts.

Today, try a real Bosch fuel pump to get 3 bars in the line (now only 2, maybe just/whatsoever if the gauge is correct or not).

Still waiting contact switch for key and other stuff from Witor to try firing up again...

Plus 2 new injectors from USA received and i reorganised fuel line in the trunk because it was non sense to me.

Hi guys.

There's a gap and klonk noise on the streering column : i think there's a missing  bushing or something down on the firewall where the column is going through.

link to chriswitor parts

Is it this part or do have a link to the correct Mk2 thing that is missing?

Thanks.

Cosmetic question :

Thinking about alloys in 14"

- Nissan (Laurel I think), i like them not too classic, and look good in dark center with polished surfaces

- Centerline , always loved them since the mid eighties, when in hot rod magazines, may be a bit too racing

I prefer the Nissan ones. The others are certainly too “racey” (or something) for me.

Lotus Eclat wheels fit and look good on the mk2

I have a pic on my PC.

Also consider 15”. I put 15” K&N Minators on mine with 205/60 tyres iirc.

Whichever size, care is needed with offset/ET as the big difference in track between front and rear makes it more or less impossible to find a combination that fills the front arches properly without interference at the rear. Mk1 have a narrower track rear which is easier.

Of the four styles shown (two from the OP, two from Nick) I definitely would opt for the Nissan ones. Mind you, I'd probably go with original steel or 2500S alloys in preference even to them.

I've seen the Nissan on a mk2 very gorgeous and as if made for this car. So.maybe going on them less than 200€ with only cosmetic work to do on them.

I keep genuine wheels of course.

But focused on the car becoming a runner...

Just checking in with you frenchiemk2.

Have been watching this for some time now, I think since July 21, last post was a while back, please give us an update.

I'm hoping I haven't missed something and all the progress has been moved to a different thread 😉

Anyhow as many of us do, i hope all is well with you, I just can't wait to here how the triumph is coming on.

You have done so very well, the car has come so far, it's been a fantastic journey to follow, all the help and encouragement too. Any update would be great ☺ please it's Christmas after all.

Hi! that's kind of you. Yep 2 month problems with work and my aging dad, so much time involved elsewhere and far from home.

I've just ordered refection seals for the metering unit from C.Witor 😉 in order to progress because renewing the injection linkage in this Lucas/Bosch mess is quite special... after replacing injectors, renewing the old ones and new seals, there still was only a spray on 1st cyl and just leak on 2 others.

The car stayed 14 years stored in a garage...

The guy i know hadn't time to finish the fuel linkage from tank to main line, but i'll send him a message tomorrow.

Te other problem is before that i tried to fire it up but tere was no spark whereas all electric distribution is new (upgrade electronic unit)..

As a summary now :

- 6 new or cleaned bosch injectors

- 6 new injectors seals

- unfinished linkage for bosch fueling system

- seals for metering unit ordered (so, i'm gonna take it out of the car and read about the maintenance while waiting the parts)

- still this spark problem to fix (could it be linked to switch, because when we tried to, at the end the all ignition failed)

I'm close to make it run, but i recon i'm a bit exhausted. I'd like so much to ear it and drive a while!

Fresh news (freezing outside).

New fuel line assembly completed today. No leak (for today).

Issue : Can't turn or crank

- fuel pump turning and line is getting in pressure

no ignition light (no gauges pin moving) but clock ticking

no nothing but 1 time i had the ignition light for a sec (the day we tried to make the first turn, we had all indicators and starter motor engaging, it's a moment later that Something failed).

If anyone has an idea or an hint, would be cool.

Ok Guys, do you have any recommendations about maintenance and modern fluids : according to Haynes,

- oil should be 20W50, maybe have a test a while with this spec

- Breakes fluid should be SAE70R3 but i think modern DOT4 be a good  fluid replacement

- Cooling fluid : old school water + antifreeze or modern and which one for internals preservation?

Thanks.

Yes, 20/50 with a suitable level of ZDDP. It’s a bit specialist these days. There are various UK suppliers, (not very helpful to you), but Valvoline VR1 is a decent oil and may be available in France?

Yes, DoT 4 is fine

Water/ethylene glycol. Conventional blue/green stuff. Not the pink OAT stuff.

Thanks, 1st i'll use some good 20w50 the time to see how the engine behaves... then i'll try Valvoline, yes we can find here.
